I'm used to lame, wich mostly cames in to types, a lame.DLL and a lame.EXE. Now i'm trying to get Ogged :-), but i dont understand, why there are ogg.dll, vorbis.dll, vorbisenc.dll, vorbisfile.dll. Also, i can see daily vorbis.dll, and vorbis.dll for razorlame. And dont forget oggenc.exe. For example, i want to use ogg with CD-DA X-Tractor, but couldn't do it. What gives?

1) Download
OggDropXPd.zip from
RareWares
2) Start and set quality to
5.75 for music (hope a midway between audiophiles and common mortals

)
3) Drop the WAV files to the fish and voilą

There are three main types of ogg "files":
1. There is the packet that contains four files inside (ogg.dll, vorbis.dll, vorbisenc.dll, vorbisfile.dll). This packet is the daily vorbis dll's for CDex and WinLame.
2. There is the OggDropXPd, that is a drag and drop application for enncoding and deconding
And 3. There is the oggenc.exe, that is a command line encoder.
I hope that I have answer to your question:)

At rarewares, i downloaded a dailyvorbis.zip wich contains vorbis.dll, oggenc.exe, and vorbisgain. vorbis.dll, i asume, is the "packet" you refer to. But is the oggvorbis-dll.zip wich contains ogg.dll, vorbis.dll, vorbisenc.dll, vorbisfile.dll the one that says is for WinLame or CDex. Not the packet.
Either way, no one works for CD-XA.

Generally you don't need this DLLs, vorbis.dll ogg.dll vorbisenc.dll and vorbisfile.dll are the main components for programs and tools to use/encode/decode Ogg and Vorbis (ogg is only the container file... like AVI is)
Don't know how works CD-DA X-Tractor... sincerely there are better programs like EAC (the best) and CDex, for this last you could download the DLLs from RareWares site.
*** DO NOT ENCODE ON FLY, FIRST EXTRACT AND THEN ENCODE ***
...or you will get sporadic "clicks" even with the best CD-ROM unit in the world (so try & enjoy OggDropXpd)
To play Ogg Vorbis files download an up to date Winamp version (2.80, not 3 alpha) or simply download the Ogg Vorbis Winamp plugin (now at home-page of this forum).
If you need also to play Ogg audio/video files (.ogm or .ogg) you could download the Ogg DirectShow Filters at
www.doom9.org (sotware download page) merged in one EXE package. Then any Windows player will play the OGG files.
Note: libvorbis.dll is an unofficial DLL, it's simply a 4-in-1 merge of the 4 official DLLs (vorbis.dll ogg.dll vorbisenc.dll and vorbisfile.dll).
For example this DLL is used by BeSweet, one unique tool to encode WAV/AC3 to everything.
Note2: Programs maybe bundled with files like "vorbis.dll", this couldn't be standard ogg vorbis component... in this case substituting the DLL with up to date standard VORBIS.DLL WILL NOT work (the files aren't the same "thing").

Daily OggEnc, Vorbis.dll and VorbisGain are the command line encoder.(Dailyvorbis.zip- 604 kb)
Ogg.dll, vorbis.dll, vorbisenc.dll, vorbisfile.dll areDaily vorbis DLLs for WinLame and CDex.(oggvorbis-dll.zip-149 kb)

I am using CDex:( Why don't you try oggdropxpd?
re: OggDropXPd
I tried OggDropXPd, but when using it to playback, the sound was choppy, so I can't trust the encoding process to work correctly either. The "XP" in the title leads me to believe it's tuned for Windows XP and I use ME. Is that the cause of my problem with it?
(I normally use CDex ton encode anyway, so it's not a big deal - the simple playback feature would have been useful tho.)

@mijj
The latest version of oggdropXPd, available from the links below, plays back perfectly OK. There was a version a little while ago where I screwed it up, but that was resolved.
The XP means 'eXPerienced', and the 'd' was because I added decoding, it was just a means of distinguishing it from the official oggdrop. It was developed under ME originally and I only switched to Win2K a couple of weeks back. It ran fine under ME.
If you still find a problem, let me know, but it should be AOK now. It uses perfectly standard oggvorbis libraries, so the output is no different.
I dloaded the most recent version of OggDropXPd from your link.
For test purposes I converted a known file from OGG (q=8) to WAV and then to OGG(q=4). I played back on Winamp and the result is perfect.
However, I get a problem when I use OggDropXPd to playback the very same final OGG file. I still get a stutter like glitch. I've replayed several times and the glitches occur at exactly the same place each time.

The original question hasn't answer yet...
Why 3 DLLs for encode Vorbis with CDex, and not only one, like LAME?
It's all horribly complicated for the simple newcomer such as myself.
What's needed is a central database where you can select which Software-which-Uses-Vorbis you use and it tells you which Ogg, Vorbis DLLs and exes are needed and which zip files store em and the web addresses where you can get the zip files!
Here's the LD on which files should be needed for doing things:
oggenc.exe (and the other exes from vorbis-tools, if you so desire) are all you need to encode ogg files.
For cd-ripping programs: Most of them can be set up to use an external encoder and pointed at oggenc.exe. EAC has it's own Ogg Vorbis profile. The latest beta of CDex comes with it's own vorbis 1.0 dll compiles for it's own use, or could be pointed at oggenc.exe (I do believe).
The various .dlls are really only of use to software authors, which is why they're only packaged with the sdk. If a program requires those libraries and doesn't ship them with their sotware, they need to be smacked hard with a clue stick.
ok - I'm trying to keep my files upto date ...
I have these options for download ...
RareWares ...
oggdec.exe 159kb 19/7/2002 (zipped)
oggenc.exe 188kb 19/7/2002 (zipped)
VorbisGain.exe 130kb 19/07/2002 (zipped)
Vorbis.com ...
oggdec.exe 152kb 19/7/2002 (zipped)
oggenc.exe 1036kb 19/7/2002 (zipped)
sjeng.org/ftp/vorbis/vorbisgain.exe ...
vorbisgain.exe 192kb 19/7/2002 (direct dload)
so - can anyone tell me which is the most upto date source?
and what's with the huge difference in file size for oggenc.exe?

Vorbis.com and RareWares.
At both sources the compiles are provided by John33, but they arrive faster at RareWares since he uploads them himself.

... ah, thanks.
I suppose the difference in file size is down to the different compilers rather than any difference in substance.
.. but what about the two different VorbisGain files?

At last check, vorbisgain was up to 0.32, but the files available through RareWares were "only" 0.30. This will probably get updated soon, if it hasn't been already.
