Full Version: What is the bandwidth of WAV and/or PCM

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before. I did a search and couldn't find anything.

What is the bandwidth of uncompressed wav? Just to make sure I'm asking the right question, how much throughput would I need on a network connection to stream an uncompressed wav? Would 343 kbps suffice?

PCM (WAVE & AIFF) is 1411kbps

Chart table I made up awhile ago (hopefully I didn't forget anything):
  • 8 Bits = 1 Byte
  • 1Kbyte = 1,024 Bytes (8,192 bits)
  • 1Mbit = 128 Kbyte
  • 11 Mbits ÷ 8 = 1.375 MBytes
  • 11Mbit = 11,264 Kbit maximum theoretical bandwidth
  • CD-DA = 1,411 Kbits/S
  • 1,411Kbit = 1.38Mbit (1.37793 precisely)
  • 1,411Kbit = 0.172241 Mbyte
This would be for raw, PCM audio.

Assuming you mean CD-DA a.k.a. "Red Book" audio, PCGuide.com - Compact Disk Digital Audio (CD-DA) is a good, simple explanation.

If not, could you please be more specific?

Thanks for the responses. That's the info I needed. I guess the quick and dirty calculation is:

44100 samples/second * 16 bits/sample * 2 [for two channels] = 1411.2 kbps
