Hi
i ripped some live in mp3 --alt-preset extreme , and i use my iriver to listen my live audio ripped

but is there a swith to eliminate the silence between the songs ?

The short amwer is "no."

... and the long answer is, rip to a large single wav > mp3 for your portable device. Or investigate as to whether there is a gapless format (other than MP3) for your portable.

The problem itself is not (only) about whether the chosen format is "naturally" gapless or not.
Actually, most iRiver products can play ogg vorbis files as well in addition of mp3. But even when playing ogg files (separate files), there are gaps.
So maybe using a large file is the only solution so far.

The "problem" lies in the firmware or some hardware limitations. IIRC, iRiver have promised a firmware to allow gapless playback for the iHP-1x0.

Yes that is what I meant, but didn't make clear. blush.gif

Just my usual reminder: Vorbis is not more gapless than mp3.

The lucky Rio Karma users can enjoy gapless mp3 playing.

I think that's not really correct.

Vorbis has been gapless from the start, and the gapless information is stored in an official way inside the .ogg file. Probably all .ogg files in existance are gapless, with the eventual exception of some files where the information was stripped for some reason.

MP3 has only recently become gapless, and the information is stored in a non-standardized way inside a "proprietary" tag. Only one encoder stores that information. And only MP3s encoded with recent versions of that encoder have this information. All other MP3s out there are gapped.

Another difference is in decoders/players. Only one software player supports gapless MP3 playback (two, if you consider using an unofficial plugin). OTOH, all software players using the standard Vorbis decoding libraries are gapless.

You talk about hardware player: I don't think MP3 can be seriously considered gapless when only one player, out of hundreds, supports this feature. Every other player out there, including my Philips Expanium, is gappy.

I mostly agree. Even Ogg Speex files are gapless now.

Saying the "Vorbis codec" is less gapless is misleading, IMHO.
Gabriel
Ogg Vorbis has provisions to be gapless, and is gapless using the current encoders.
Vorbis itself is not gapless.

Regarding hardware players, I am wondering how many ones able to handle Ogg Vorbis are gapless.
kjoonlee
..but when people say Vorbis, they almost always mean Ogg Vorbis, not raw Vorbis or Vorbis-over-RTP. (edit: And Ogg Vorbis has been gapless for practically all encoders up to now, not just for the latest encoder.)

Players that use the MCS Logic chip can be made gapless. Examples are players by Havin and FreeMax. There was a gapless firmware release for FreeMax.
