I was just wondering if it mattered in Mp3 quality (using CDex) if your directx and aspi is out of date.

I have successfully backed up one of my CD's already and it seems to sound fine.

I ran ASPI check and it showed my current ASPI files.....

wnaspi32.dll version 1.0.0.1
winaspi.dll version 1.0.0.65
apix.vxd version 4.0.0.952
aspienum.vxd---No existing file to compare, upgrade recommended

Then it says that ASPI is not properly installed. One or more components have been replaced with older versions of the software.

and it says i am running win 95? currently i'm using win98se.

IF I NEED TO UPDATE MY ASPI, WHAT VERSION SHOULD I USE?

here's the actual logfile:

LOG0143: *****************************************************************

UPGRADE1004: c:\windows\system\wnaspi32.dll dated 04/24/1999 03:22:00, 36864 bytes.
UPGRADE1062: c:\windows\system\wnaspi32.dll version 1.0.0.1
UPGRADE1004: c:\windows\system\winaspi.dll dated 04/24/1999 03:22:00, 3536 bytes.
UPGRADE1062: c:\windows\system\winaspi.dll version 1.0.0.65
UPGRADE1004: c:\windows\system\iosubsys\apix.vxd dated 04/24/1999 03:22:00, 29497 bytes.
UPGRADE1062: c:\windows\system\iosubsys\apix.vxd version 4.0.0.952
UPGRADE0965: File c:\windows\system\aspienum.vxd does not exist
UPGRADE0369: No existing file to compare, upgrade recommended
ASPICHK0522: Inconsistent version numbers among components
ASPICHK0592: ASPI installation has problems

PLUS, I am running directx6.1. like i said, i backed up one cd already and it seems to sound fine.

Do i need to update directx??? What version do you recommend? 9.0?

9.0c was recently released a week ago. Do you recommend this or 9.0b or a different version or should I keep 6.1?

Maybe this thread will help others updating their drivers.

THANKS GUYS!

DirectX doesn't matter. Install 9.0c if you use games and such. As for ASPI, search for "ForceASPI" and install with that, it should work.

DirectX shouldn't matter in ripping/encoding of cd's. However you may want to grab Nero's wnaspi32.dll and place it in the directory of CDeX

well, the thing is, cdex works without updating.

I guess my real question is do I need to or should i go with the mentality of "if it's not broke, don't fix it".

OR, should I regardless install updated aspi.

READ!!!------>*******OK, I dled ASPI 4.60 and tried to install it and recieved this message:

This update requires that either an adaptec host adapter or an adaptec version of the aspi be installed on your system. If you are updating a version of Aspi delivered with a non-adaptec application, then you should download and run that program's update utility instead.

I don't get it. now what.

EDIT: btw, what's the point in having the wnaspi32.dll pasted in the cdex folder anyway?

Maybe if you read my post again...
mailer2
ok, use forceaspi.

But again....what's the point? what does it do?

Like I said, CDex seems to be working and producing decent sounding files, so why should I install ASPI?

What does installing ASPI do for CDex?
CiTay
An ASPI layer with files of different versions can lead to incompatibilities. Doesn't happen in your case, but why not fix the ASPI installation. Also, i wonder why your DirectX is so horribly outdated. You should run WindowsUpdate, maybe you're missing some important other updates. But Windows 98 support is long discontinued anyway, it has many security holes that will forever remain unfixed...

why does everybody use the Nero winaspi32.dll and not the v4.60 winaspi32.dll (or others for that matter).

Just wondering why people use the Nero version and if there's a difference if you use a different one.
