Barry Manilow "A Very Strange Medley (V.S.M.)" from "Barry Manilow Live" 1977 (don't laugh, these are excerpts from old mid 1970's commercials... brings back a serious nostalgia for those who were alive then, and old enough to remember).

Harry Belafonte - "Matilda" (from "Belafonte at Carnegie Hall" live 1959) -- everybody should hear this one! Just a plain terrific performance, absolutely stellar. Would have loved to have been there, except I wouldn't be born for another 5 years. Ahh, them's the breaks. smile.gif

Calexico - [Feast Of Wire #08] Woven Birds

The Tucson, AZ based band plays a refreshing mix of jazz, (post-)rock, country and latin music. Their diversity is particularly well-represented on their latest album Feast Of Wire (2003), which features everything from poppish "mexican style" tunes to short, raw sounding interludes, to longer tracks with an almost orchestral score including string ensembles, to songs I am tempted to call industrial jazz (or something blink.gif ), or straightforward jazz pieces like Crumble with its predominant upright bass and jazzy trumpets.

I had the chance to see them in concert last wednesday - effin' awesome, high energy and very entertaining because of all of them being very skilled musicians and half of the six-piece being multi-instrumentalists on top of that. They had a strong "mexican"/latin vibe going on, much more prominent than on the latest album - perfect summer music smile.gif If those guys play near you (and you think you might faintly like their music), definitely give them a whirl. Highly recommended!

David Bowie's cover of "My Death" (originally by Jacques Brel, re-arranged by Scott Walker) that can be found in the Live At Santa Monica Civic Hall 1972 bootleg...it's probably the most emotional acoustic performance of Bowie and an astonishing song in general. It gives me the creeps every time I listen to...

I just have to include the lyrics:

My death waits like an old roué
So confident I'll go his way
Whistle to him and the passing time
My death waits like a bible truth
At the funeral of my youth
Weep loud for that and the passing time
My death waits like a witch at night
As surely as our love is bright
Let's not think about the passing time

CHORUS
But what ever lies behind the door
There is nothing much to do
Angel or devil, I don't care
For in front of that door, there is you

My death waits like a beggar blind
Who sees the world through an unlit mind
Throw him a dime for the passing time
My death waits there between your thighs
Your cool fingers will close my eyes
Let's not think of that and the passing time
My death waits to allow my friends
A few good times before it ends
So let's drink to that and the passing time

My death waits there among the leaves
In magicians' mysterious sleeves
Rabbits and dogs and the passing time
My death waits there among the flowers
Where the blackest shadow, blackest shadow cowers
Let's pick lilacs for the passing time
My death waits there in a double bed
Sails of oblivion at my head
So pull up the sheets against the passing time

--This is a guy from my hometown of Macon, GA who produces under his own label, and is an outstanding musician IMO. I would describe his style as a sort of introspective southern rock/electric blues. He personally gave me this copy of his first album shortly after it was cut in 1994. He has made several others since...

Mano Negra - Puta's Fever (full album) mp3

Mano Negra was a french band, that in the late eighties and early nineties fused The Clash with polka, salsa, reggae, african and middle-eastern rhythms and old-radio station and old-movie dialogue samples, specially from Latin America. The band leader was Manu Chao, which is a little bit more well known. He speaks several languages and uses them all on his songs, specially french, english and spanish.
This band had a huge impact on some bands from Latin America that have expanded their fusions even further.
They disbanded in 1994, Manu Chao carried on. His 2001 album, "Proxima Estacion...Esperanza" was critically acclaimed. Some magazines like Spin and Rolling Stone called him "our new Bob Marley" (not quite, IMHO) and had it in their "Best of 2001" lists. I am not too fond of his solo work as lacks much of the exploration of his former band. So if you like Manu Chao, you must definitely check out Mano Negra. As I think it is vastly superior.
What can I say, it's not rock n'roll, but I like it.

I'm listening a FM radio station, the best that I ever listened here, it's about ASPEN CLASSIC 102.3, it's a rock/pop 70-80-90 decade format radio, a local radio station takes the signal via satellite and re-broadcast it in my city. Now broadcasting: Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven, early Pink Floyd - Breathe, I love ASPEN CLASSIC. The slogan is: Si ves musica, escucha ASPEN CLASSIC (If you see music, you listen to ASPEN CLASSIC).
