A decade ago ENJA president Matthias Winckelmann compiled the first "Ballads" album which is a classic today. At that time nobody could foresee the huge international success of the "Ballads" series that sold far more than 100,000 copies worldwide. The new volume, the fifth in the series, appropriately includes an astonishing version of "Take Five", one of the most legendary jazz standards, named for its unusual five-four measure. "Ballads 5 - Take Five" focus on brand new and upcoming releases by such as Trio Elf, veteran trumpeter Dusko Goykovich, singer Céline Rudolph, pianist Florian Weber's Trio Minsarah and even Frank Tusa's "Father Time" band of 1975 that was just made available on CD for the first time. The CD program's encore offers the undisputed father of the jazz ballad, Coleman Hawkins, in a historic 1966 recording of his best-known ballad vehicle, "Body And Soul".

Jeremy Steig came to fame as leader of his band Jeremy & The Satyrs who were pioneers in the jazz-rock movement. An outstanding jazz flutist, Steig exploited a wide range of performance techniques. In the seventies, he frequently collaborated with bassist Eddie Gomez, best known for his work with Bill Evans, Jim Hall and Paul Bley. Gomez is a virtuoso performer whose swiftness makes him an ideal bassist in small groups. Recorded during a European tour in 1976, "Outlaws" is considered a milestone album in jazz duets. "The session catches the special magic of that oscillating feedback loop created by emphatic interaction between superb performers and a sensitive audience," Downbeat magazine read. It was the now legendary start of a string of duet albums by the flute & bass team of Steig & Gomez.

Bob's trio date "Sequoia Song" of 1976 is one of the timeless jewels in the ENJA catalog. A sophisticated interpreter, the charm and attraction of Degen's music are based on an outstanding technique, great feeling and a sublime creativeness. He uses a great deal of space in all he does while probing and pushing with unforeseeable piano lines. Even 30 years after its recording, "Sequoia Song" is among the true miracles of piano trio jazz.

Born in 1942 in Tokyo, Terumasa Hino made his professional debut in 1955. After the great success of his album "Hi-nology" (1969) he performed at the Berliner Jazztage in 1971 and at many other festivals before moving to New York in 1975. Today Hino is a lving legend and the most famous national jazz musician in Japan. Once an editor of Miles Davis transcriptions, his powerful playing in the 70s and his "large, brilliant tone" (Grove Dictionary) have often been compared to Miles Davis' 60s style. "Taro's Mood" is a fiery, high-energy live document of freestyle hardbop that also allows moments of surprising lyricism.

A bordercrossing journey through jazz ballads and world music visions, this sterling album includes some of the band's most inspired performances and features Tusa's bass as one of the lead instruments. With each tune played in a different instrumentation, this album is a collection of timeless gems.

"Scratch" is still one of the finest and most challenging recordings Kenny Barron has ever made. A multi-poll winner, Barron has accompanied Abbey Lincoln, Barney Kessel, Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, James Moody, J.J. Johnson, Joe Henderson and many others. Tolliver's bright, rounded timbre on trumpet and flugelhorn could be heard with partners such as Jackie McLean, Horace Silver, Roy Ayers, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey and Max Roach. In 1969 he founded the quartet "Music, Inc." that worked successfully until the end of the seventies. "Impact" was the most impressive document of this band presenting advanced hardbop statements with grooving vamps and high-energy blowing. Young Alvin Queen even quit his job with George Benson in order to work with Tolliver whom he knew since their days in the Horace Silver band. A charismatic live recording from Munich's legendary Domicile club, this edition offers two thrilling bonus tracks that sound as fresh as they did 35 years ago. Down Beat: Five stars.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller is an expressive, forward-thinking musician with a bent toward post-bop and soulful, expansive jazz. Interested in music from a young age, Fuller's piano and flute studies began around age three and culminated in her earning a bachelor's degree in music from Spelman College in the '90s. Later, Fuller sought her masters degree in jazz pedagogy from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Subsequently, she found performance opportunities with a bevy of name artists and ensembles, such as Charles Fambrough, Mickey Roker, Ralph Peterson, T.S. Monk, Rufus Reid, and others — including the Gerald Wilson Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. She released her debut album, Healing Space, on Mack Avenue in 2007.
