Hi everyone, I'm new here and a newbie at that but I'm hoping to learn about something.

I just got a new Rio Cali 256MB MP3 player but when I drag my mp3 files from my music file on the Hard Drive to the F:drive (the drive assigned to my mp3 player), some of the names change. For instance:

1. Eminem - Lose Yourself

becomes just: 1

While track 2:

2. Alanis Morisette - You Oughta Know

Shows up just like you see above. Some names show up just fine I'm just wondering what's going on and can it be changed on an mp3 file or not.

Probably because you put a dot after the tracknumber. Usually the dot is used to separate the file name and the file type like: filename.mp3 Your player probably thinks that the file type comes after the dot and removes it when it presents the file.

Yeah that may be it. I wonder what is another way to organize my files chronalogically that would be good. Some way to name them, in the order I want them, without the period.

Since your portable player's hard disk is formatted using the FAT filesystem, some stupid restrictions apply on some filenames which contain dots -- thanks to the Advanced Microsoft design ® .

I agree the dot is a nice separator, but maybe you should use '-' instead ?

Btw if you have no problems with the same files on your PC's hard drive, it's probably because you have NTFS partitions.

Fat32 has no problem with files containing multiple dots under windows.
must be some H/W limitations on the device

There are other FAT variants too. Maybe the hardware player uses DOS/Windows 3.x combo?

Could it be re-writing the filenames based on tags? ie The Eminem track has no tags.

His second example has a period after the track number as well, so this theory doesn't explain what is going on.
Must be an ID3 tag related problem.
