Full Version: Sound Quality Comparison

I'm trying to decide whether I should keep the OGG or MP3 of a song I have. The OGG has an average bitrate of 91 kbps and a nominal bitrate of 96 kbps. The MP3 is 199 kbit (VBR) and is encoded by Lame 3.90. Which file has better quality theoretically?

It depends on the track itself, but the 190kbit mp3 is very likely to have better quality than 90kbit vorbis. Mp3 is generally transparent at 190kbit whereas vorbis at 90kbit generally isn't.

The best way to answer your question is for you to download ff123's ABC/HR or ABC/HR-java and test the tracks against each other for quality.

Would that work if all I have are those 2 files and neither of them are the original source? ermm.gif

Strictly speaking, you want to compare against the original, but if you're ok with just
determining which one you prefer, then it should be ok. You'll have to decode to WAV, first, though, and you'll have to assign one of the files to represent the missing original.

    5 out of 7, pval = 0.227

I honestly couldn't tell the difference. It was luck I suppose. yeahright.gif

hm.. if you dont notice the difference then why does it matter which one you delete? When i run into a situation like this i usually delete the smaller file, or whichever one is shorter.

ogg file may also be a transcode from an mp3.

One easy thing that will help see the quality difference is decode both files then encode them to something like mp3 @128 kbps the ogg file will sound like shit.
