Full Version: flac support in SoundForge?
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Lossless Audio Compression > FLAC
Audiofilez
Hi:
Is there any plug-in that will allow Soundforge to open and edit flac files? Also, and this is equally important to allow flac files to be burned to audio cds using CD Architect?

The above may be a dumb and redundant question. If so I apologize and ask, since I'm new to the forum, for your kind understanding.

What's with the fixation on Sony? To answer your question, I do not know of a way to get FLAC en/decoding in Sound Forge. There is a plugin for CoolEdit/Adobe Audition. It is mentioned a few times on this forum and you could perform a search to find it. As for a burning tool that natively burns FLAC, I would recommend the free Burrrn.

Edit: If you need a lossless codec that is supported in both those programs, try the proprietary Perfect Clarity Audio.

And what's with the fixation on Sony fixation? wink.gif
Seriously though, both CD Architect and Sound Forge have only recently (well, beginning of 2003 or so) been taken over by Sony, and just happen to have been top notch programs in their class ever since they were still in Sonic Foundry's hands, and they still are (top notch, I mean).

I don't know what happened to Sonic Foundry's Perfect Clarity Audio since the partial Sony take-over, but I haven't heard much (read: nothing at all) about it since then. Is it just my impression that its development has been ceased? Anyone know a bit more about this?
Anyway, to advise PCA seems somewhat overappreciative towards it, if you get my drift. I can't suggest anything more relevant though. Sorry.

I don't mean Sony in particular. I've been using Sound Forge and ACID when they were SoFo, I just referred to the current owner.

By all appearances, Sony has no interest in furthering development on Perfect Clarity Audio. Nevertheless, it is supported in both those programs, so it may be useful for the original poster. If the OP wants to stick with FLAC, I suggested two other programs that offer similar functionality and FLAC support.

Edit: You may also try Windows Media Lossless. I know WMA 9 is supported, so it may work.

FLAC is now supported in Sony Sound Forge as of version 9.0b... Current update is 9.0c... Finally! Now if only Cubase, Logic and OS X would join in!

Audacity 1.2.6 supports FLAC.
Edit: as well as LAME, OGG Vorbis etc.
