Just released, one of the major music/sound making software is here in version 3. Four of the major news (of about 70):

* Audio Warp - a real-time time stretching and pitch shifting tool.
* User-definable workspaces - to create virtual desktops, with a separate work area for each step of the production process, and switch between them with a key command.
* The Freeze functionality introduced in Cubase SX 2.0 to free up CPU resources in the host computer has also been extended to include audio tracks and insert effects, and is now faster and more effective.
* Cubase SX3 is the first version of Cubase to support a 64-bit operating system, and supports up to 4GB of RAM when used with a 64-bit operating system.

Sweet! My only experience is with Cubase SL 1.0.

That's a lot of options in that screenshot, what kind of level is this aimed at? (a.k.a. how much higher then Audition?)

Cubase is more of a music composition tool whereas Audition is more of a high-end multi-track audio editor. There's more functional overlap between them than there used to be but there designed for different purposes.

Not very different UI compared Cubase SX 2, I must admit.

This actually bothers me because it means bugfixes to v2 will now stop. (I admit it has gotten much better than the 2.0 release) There aren't really any new, great features in it unless you want the timestretching. Good if you make techno music but helps me not-at-all. Seems like a point release being packaged as a major upgrade.

Just saw on another forum that:

Inplace Editing (Edit Midi/Audio directly in the Tracks !!) and generally enhanced workflow.

is also a new feature. That is useful. Still don't know about "v3" though.

There's a bunch of other cool stuff. Project order tracks for pattern-based composition, improved folder tracks, much better freeze function, delay comp. for external effects, midi maps, per-clip volume and pan envelopes. I'm really looking forward to this release.
