Full Version: Command line for *very* low bitrate?

Could someone suggest a good LAME command-line for *very* low bitrate encoding (24kbps/32kbps CBR)? I'm encoding some files for a streaming broadcast so I'm fairly limited by the bitrate, but I'd like to have it sound as good as possible given the limitations. I remember Dibrom posting a good-sounding command line on the r3mix forum some time ago, but I can't seem to find it now. Any ideas?

Thanks!
Dibrom
If you have to use bitrates this low, then you should really go with an fhg codec and not LAME. LAME isn't really optimized for bitrates this low and lacks intensity stereo which makes a big difference at these bitrates. I'd suggest using something like Fastenc.

Well, they'd be mono encodings, not stereo. Does that still make much of a difference? Where can I find the other encoders?

Ok, again, here are my lowbitrate command lines. i'm still open for new suggestions. They have been tested with Lame 3.90 alphas.

CODE

Stereo CBR 56:

lame -mf -h -b56 --resample 22 --lowpass 11 --nspsytune

Mono CBR 32:

lame -a -h -b32 --resample 22 --lowpass 11 --nspsytune

Mono CBR 16:

lame -a -h -b16 --resample 11 --lowpass 5.5 --nspsytune

Stereo is not so good in Lame for lowbitrates, but you can always try. Judging from recent posts to the mp3encoder mailing list, it seems there is still hope for an Intensity stereo implementation. I hope they do it, even a brute force super slow method would be greatly appreciated wink.gif
There is also something about implementing mixed blocks that could help lowbitrates a little.

If you notice too many annoying noises, try reducing the lowpass a little bit more.

i i was going so low i woudle either use mp3pro og vqf format.
maybe even consider wma :-)

these are not otimized for hi-fi but for low bitrates

woulde give you better audio quality aat such low bitrates
