Audiofora and HydrogenAudio have moved. /EDIT

Tired of telling newbies to read the FAQ ?

Tired of analyzing super-wizz-disco-light command lines like -V0 -ms --nspsytune -mj --vbr-mtrh -q0 --nssafejoint --vbr-old --dm-preset standard --r3mix --vbr-new -h -V4 -b96 --lowpass 19.5 --athtype 2 --ns-sfb21 9 -B 224 --athlower 10 --ath-adjust 2 --cwlimit 22000 --ns-bass 10 -q5 --ns-alto 5 --adapt-thres-type 2 --ns-treble 2 -scale 0.95 -Z -Z -Z -Z -Z -Z ?

Tired of trolls pretending that CBR 192 MS is far superior to --alt-preset standard ?

Update :
Changed the "Born/grew up/fine tuned" parts to "pre researches (anyone with a better english title ?) / dm presets / alt presets " following JohnV's word about all the dm stuff having nothing to do with the alt presets.

I gathered these links for the sake of scientific bibliography.
I had the feeling, seeing posts with clumsy command lines answered by "read the Faq", that we could no more provide a scientific proof of the quality of the alt presets, and might loose our credibility RTFF after RTFF.
Now, the proof is archived and linked !

Of course, very few, if any, people is going to read all those messages.
It seems the --nspsytune and --nssafejoint vbr presets.. can give an account of the dm presets, while the three last links could cover the alt presets themselves.

That would be 4 links covering more closely the alt presets devlopment, what do you think ?

I know there are lots more. I saw them in r3mix and here, but I didn't kept them.
In summer 2001, quite every thread in r3mix.net was about tweaking Lame presets. I only kept the ones where the technical points were discussed, or where listening tests were made. It took me more than 5 minutes, I'd say between 2 and 5 hours to gather the links in the first post.

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=466

OK

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=467

Technical infos about the differences between the compiles, OK

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=468

Nothing about improvements here, mostly a discussion about the presets in the dll. And a word about rev8b and rev8c without any explanation. Not worth.

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=479

OK

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=498

A false alert, the sample posted had been encoded with MAD auto attenuation. Nothing audible when encoded properly. Irrelevant.

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=507

About including ABR presets in the DLL. Nothing about the presets themselves.

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=508

OK

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=526

Fast standard fix and discution, OK

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=529

Just rev10, and some repetitions about the differences between compiles. OK

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=549

Result of thread 508, OK

By the way, I locked all linked threads at r3mix.net, maybe you should lock all the HA ones too.
People could answer them.

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=466

If you read closely, this "update to the --dm-presets in Lame" is actually the announcement that --alt-presets have been included in Lame.
Pio2001
It says

QUOTE
The long awaited --alt-presets have finally made it into the mainline L.A.M.E.!

Basically the changes include everything that was in lame_dm_rev7

(...)

In addition, I have ported the modifications and tunings over the vbr-mtrh which means that \"--alt-preset fast standard\" and the like now have a similar increase in quality especially on impulses and everything that the slower modes improved on.

In short:

1...
2...

Were those "modifications" already in rev7, or is it an annoucement of new improvements made while the rev7 was included into Lame ? Or maybe are you saying that these improvements were already announced in a previous link ?

As for the title, I just cut'n pasted the subject of all threads.
