I'd like to ask for a help help fact-checking this guide / tutorial at:

http://jonahcosley.com/2004/super-sub-gum/encoding-guide/

Its purpose is to walk someone through all the steps from bringing a voice recording onto a computer to publishing .ram and .mp3 files on a website. I was writing it for one specific person but then figured I could turn it into something that others could use too. So I've tried to make it easy to understand.

I'm sure my own audio knowledge is rather humble compared almost everyone here on this forum, and that's why I'm wondering if anyone wouldn't mind taking a look through it to see what technical errors they might spot. Even small ones are useful to know about.

The guide isn't totally finished -- images aren't up for the "Recording" section and there is editing work yet to be done -- but all the information is there. Except for the "Sources" section!

I'll be asking a question specifically about the mp3 encoding on the MP3 Tech forum -- for the rest I figured the general forum would be okay since the guide covers such a wide range of subjects.

Anyway, my thanks to anyone who would like to look through this. Peace!

Hello, Lambert, welcome to HydrogenAudio
QUOTE
Open the Control Panel’s sound and audio devices and select “Advanced…” in the “Device volume” section; or double-click your volume control in the system tray.
Select “Options”, then “Properties” from the menu.
Select “Recording” and then “OK”.
Make sure the “Line In” column is selected.

This is valid for SoundBlaster soundcards, but other soundcards can have a completely different way to select the input. There is no general rule. If you're lost, you'll have to read the soundcard manual.

Thanks, Pio2001... I'll change the guide to reflect that when I get a chance.

Yeah & regarding the last thread you posted it's fastenc which has a JS problem not fastenc with the hq switch (aka slowenc) which IMO is a very good encoder.
