DirectSound output plugin is known to output a lower level signal. Are you absolutely sure that the two output plugins you are comparing produce exactly the same output levels? Many positive blind tests are not valid for not taking into account this "small" detail.
However, if levels are the same, the difference could then be due to internal kmixer resampling... but Win98SE has no kmixer... (?)
So, in Win98 SE, plain waveout and ASIO output plugins should produce exactly the same signal, bit for bit identical. Waveout does not modify played signal at all, I still haven't tested ASIO output plugin.
As to SSRC wave output plugin, I don't think the difference with plain waveoutput plugin is easily perceivable, or perceivable at all, on quality non-resampling cards.
I think that the only advantage of using ASIO output plugin would be to bypass kmixer resampling on Win2K and WinXP machines.
