Full Version: AudioCoding wiki

Hello audio coding fans,

Today I have set up a wiki specially meant for every topic having to do with audio coding.
It can be found at http://www.audiocoding.com/wiki/.
For everybody that doesn't know yet what a wiki exactly is (like me this morning :-) ), info on that can be found there too. Basically, a wiki is a publically editable website, meaning that everybody who feels like it can add his knowledge to the website.

I sincerely hope that all the great people here, involved in audio coding, are willing to add there knowledge to this site, making it a great additional resource, next to HA. Remember, this site is not meant to compete with HA, I feel it's more like an addition.

I also hope that no one will abuse the right to edit the pages. IP's can be blocked, and I will do that if neccessary.

Please look around on the site a bit, and try to add something in the SandBox. After that you can all start by leaving your message on the RecentVisitors page. Maybe even try to create you personal homepage.

Happy editing :-)

* Limited (2 channels, 44.100hz, 16bits only) (note that this will change with (StreamVersion 8)? )

Currently 1 and 2 channels are supported. The current encoder can easily extended to more
channels, to extend the decoder is the current problem.

Bit depth of source can be from 1 bit (which is nonsense) up to 32 bit linear PCM.

Allowed sampling frequencies are 32 kHz, 37.8 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz (44.1 and 48 kHz are
tuned).

* Undefined licensing scheme, due to use of patents on MP2 and PNS algorithms

It do not touch PNS patents. There are no patents concerning usage of PNS outside AAC
in Europe.

* Lack of managed bitrates mode (not suitable for streaming in slow connections)

Below 80 kbps Musepack is not suitable. Between 80 and 100 kbps it is debatable
(still it often sounds better than MP3).
For the range between 8 and 100 kbps I recommend Ogg Vorbis or MPEG-4 AAC Version 3

Bitrate of MP3 is not 160 kbps per channel, but 320 kbps (32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz).
It is 160 kbps (8 ... 24 kHz).

You can encode 320 kbps, mono.

Other important formats:
AC3 aka Dolby Digital aka A-52
dts (Digital Theater System)
sdds (only Cinema)
ATRAC 1 and ATRAC 3

It would be cool if you could correct these errors yourself. smile.gif

Just click at the "Edit This Document" link at the bottom of the post, and after editing what needs to be edited click the save button.

You need no special permission, not even login/password.

Thanks, and enjoy. smile.gif

It was me!! biggrin.gif

LOL.. yes, I made the changes smile.gif
menno
Yeah, isn't it great :-)

If you look at the document history, you'll see that Dibrom took the data from your post and included it. Thanks for that, Dibrom!
Like Roberto, I suggest that you add the changes yourself from now on, it's just as much work as posting it here.

Np. I really like this thing.. hehe smile.gif
Faelix
Don't you guys find it dangerous to let a coletive document open to anyone that goes to the page and edit it as one likes it?

It would worry me...

P.S. Roberto, I've added a little space on your text in order to test this feature by myself.

Oh! Ok! I've found it convincing. I hope you are ready to monitor eventual hacking changes! :coding:

It will be great to have a big audio coding online manual. biggrin.gif

Why I should edit the pages? The pages are self-editing pages. You only need to wait if you don't found the
information you need. Some minutes seems to be enough ...

Frank,

Come on man, soak your feet into the warm waters of the community! It's all good..!

Everyone,

I've added a few things myself. Have fun! This is very cool!

Editing pages using the Reload button works quite well. Great! But the English is poor and sometimes
there are some German words. May be I push the Reload button too fast ...

Frank couldn't POSSIBLY be this sarcastic. This HAS to be a language issue. Doesn't it? ???

I'd rather not speculate. biggrin.gif

Hey, Layer3, when will you give your contribution there? smile.gif
SNYder
i have this odd temptation to abuse this privlige of being able to edit the site...

but i will control myself and respect this page. but i warn you, if I have the urge, so will others, and they may not be able to hold back from doing so. Hope you have it so the site automatically backups itself so you can role back to an older page. And being able to ban i.p. adress that abuse the privilage would help smile.gif

A wiki automatically stores all previous versions of a page, so restoring isn't a problem.
Larger ones (such as wikipedia) tend to have the main gateway pages password protected, but everything else completely open.
smok3
hehe, interesting concept, made my head hurt tongue.gif, is it possible to add the name of the person who last edited the page at the bottom ? (actualy question should be: where can i edit this in such a fashion that the name or ip of the person who last edited the page would appear at the bottom?)
menno
Last editor is now shown at the bottom of the screen.
Thanks for the suggestion.
