for standalone playback use the fuse tool within the DivX Fusion SDK to mux in subtitles

it can be found on labs

as it pertains to this thread, all DivX Certified devices support DivX Fusion.

Every DivX Certified device already supports xsub subtitle format, and multiple audio tracks. And the menu format is designed to be backwards compatible so existing devices today will skip them and play the main title of the video while future devices will support them natively and exisitng devices will support them with a firmware upgrade.

i assume you refer to .mp4 with "mpeg4 container"
note that neither .avi (nor the the avi variant .divx), nor .ogm or matroska are covered by the mpeg-4 standard

for placing subs in .mp4 there are different methods (one mentioned by smok3), but the best one would be to use the mpeg-4 timed text format (btw the only subtitle format ever defined by mpeg)

you can mux these subs by using the mp4box tool from gpac into .mp4 (a gui is for it is discussed here - converts .srt input to mpeg-4 ttxt in .mp4)
