Hi,
I gone through this a few times, and i'm still stuck....
In the EAC Compression Options, I've specified '--alt-preset extreme' in the command line. However, it seems that the Bit Rate in the drop down menu just below it, seems to override the presets. As far as i know, this shouldn't happen....
Any suggestions on how to get the presets to work?
Thanks,
I'm using LAME 3.92.
Thanks again...

Externel Encoder
User Defined Encoder
Additional command line options: --alt-preset standard %s %d
and that's all that gets used

Hi, thanks, but i don't really understand your answer...
What do you mean by -
Externel Encoder ?
User Defined Encoder ?
Are those the tabs i'm supposed to hit ?
Because i'm using EAC 0.9 beta 4.
Eitherway, i wanted VBR Extreme and i keep getting what chosen on the pull down menu insted...
On another question - same problem -
How can i tell for sure what settings my LAME encoder is encoding at....
When the DOS screen comes up - all it says is -
Encoding as 44.1 kHz VBR(q=2) j-stereo MPEG-1 Layer III (ca. 7.3x) qval=2
Is that the same as --alt-preset extreme ?

yup, go into File, compression options, and choose to use an External encoder, and pick user defined encoder, point it to your lame.exe, and put those command line options in the command line options entry box

Okay, gotcha,
2 questions -
Is there a difference between using 'User defined encoder' and 'LAME MP3 encoder' if they both point to my lame.exe ?
And how do i know at what rate or preset LAME is encoding at by looking at the DOS window ?
1 observation -
Refering to my original problem, i noticed that when i have --alt-preset extreme in the command line option, then it encodes at extreme VBR, regardless of what's in the 'Bit Rate' box, HOWEVER when i have CBR 360 is in the 'Bit Rate' option box, then that seems to override whatever is in the command line options box.
It seem that the EAC External encoder compression options default to the higher quality.
Is it me, or has someone else noticed this ?

You can't tell what preset is used, just guess! If you got familar to it, looking at the lowpass and the bitrate distribution may give you enough information which alt-preset is used.

A well known problem (let's say bug), you can choose every bitrate except 320 and it will be overwritten by your commandline.
Bitrate 320 is the only exception, it won't be overwritten by the additional commandline.

Well, I believe that if you use the LAME one it will add some switches to the command line based on how the rest of the dialog options are setup, but if you use the User defined encoder selection then it will only go by the command line options you supply yourself.

Well according to the post -
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...s=&threadid=260 - '--alt-preset extreme' is the best quality you can get aside from 'CBR 320'.
So to get that high quality, (--alt-preset extreme), was it meant to be used with LAME MP3 ENCODER or USER DEFINED ENCODER. And do you know what switches are added or not added when you use the different selections ?
Also, do you know what switches are used when you use --alt-preset extreme ?
Thanks,
Oh yeah, one more question... Where are the presets defined ? Are they in a seperate file, or are the compiled directly into the lame.exe ? Because i found some .rlo files bundled with RazorLame, but none defined --alt-preset extreme.
Thanks again.

if you use the User Defined Encoder then I think it's safe to say that only the command line options you specify are going to be used, so it is probably preferable. I think it's better to use '--alt-preset insane' rather than regular cbr 320, IIRC. That's still cbr 320, but with the --alt-preset code being used too, so it's better than regular cbr 320 because of that. The '--alt-preset' presets aren't simply shortcuts to longer command line options, they actually use different code in the .exe so there is no command line equivelant like there is with --r3mix.
<edit> check out 'lame --alt-preset help'
