That's what happens, either the program hangs or the explorer window of the directory that the mp3s I'm processing hangs. Anyone got a similar problem? ???

Look at the options window. There are two toggles that solve hanging problems on broken Windows versions.

Activate under "Options/Advanced..." the two settings "Use Temp Files" and "Do NOT show file progress".

Maybe this helps

You're not the only one.
This is one problem I haven't been able to figure out, though I did figure out the workaround. The problem has something to do with how the back end is working, not the GUI. If anyone ever pokes around in the back end code (available at the mp3gain site http://www.geocities.com/mp3gain ) and figures out how to fix it, please let me know.

In the meantime, the "Use Temp Files" option is only fractonally slower. The "Do not show File progress" was a false lead, but I left it in there for no good reason.

...say, maybe I should make "Use Temp Files" the default option in the GUI and re-word the message on the Options window to say, "Un-checking this box might make mp3gain run slightly faster, but it also might make your computer freeze. If that happens, just check the box again."
