Well... I've always tended to be a 1%er, especially in my musical tastes, and I certainly don't want to offend any floyd lovers around here, but... I should digress, but... That list is mostly banal crap. How could you put chilepeppers before ACDC? Come on! biggrin.gif

Maybe this sums up my feelings better. Quoting D. Boon:

Nevertheless - Pink Floyd is great! biggrin.gif

Something is seriously wrong with any list that puts U2 above the Beatles.
PoisonDan
I agree, the Beatles should have been much higher in that list (at least top-3).

@mobius: Well, it's true. The Wall is a pretentious rock opera. But it's a bloody good one. tongue.gif

And I am somewhat offended that you call this list "mostly banal crap". At the very least, the top-10 does contain some of the most important artists of the 20th century.

Sorry. Don't get me wrong, though. I do enjoy many of them. As a matter of fact, I listened to Queen all last week.. and most of Animals yesterday morning just before reading your post. Zeppelin and Stones are absolutely my faves.

Your mention of the Beatles reminds me of a radio station poll back when I was in high school. You could phone in and vote on whether you thought the Beatles were better.. or Pink Floyd. Though I listened to floyd often then, I grew up with the beatles. The beatles were like the foundation that floyd was contructed upon. At the time, I was deeply offended by the 90% or so of numbskull voters that put floyd above the beatles.

I'm older now, so perhaps I should let it go.

Another thing about that list is that the ratings were determined by record sales and concert attendance. That doesn't necessarily equate to an enjoyable listening experience. I'd also suggest that the marketing machine of pink floyd did a good job inflating the sales volumes by re-issuing DSOTM how many times? And you know that a large percentage of their fans have them all.

I guess that does make Pink Floyd the "biggest band ever" in the eyes of the modern world.

I've babbled long enough. Again, sorry- no offense intended.
Canar
They're attempting to find an objective way to rank the bands. As such, it's objective insofar as the variables used are concerned. It's still subjective in the authors' choice of statistics to use.

Remember, it's not "best" bands, it's "biggest" bands.

22) Backstreet Boys
33) Spice Girls
44) 'N Sync
...
50) Van Halen!

WTF were these people on when they made this list?! However, I do agree with Pink Floyd being the most popular band. I read one year they grossed more than any other band worldwide with their tours.

Never take any of Qs features too seriously. A recent one on downloading music would have any newbie fully believe there is no other MP3 player other than the damned iPod.
One time Q was good - with lots of interviews and reviews. I'll agree the reviews are still there, but dodgy feature articles like the downloading one and this 50 greatest bands one .... they're just fillers.

Well.. that's true for my dad (and for me). Lemme count all of the vinyl and cd editions I/he have

Vinyl:
The pink colored vinyl (shown eariler)
The quadraphonic version
The original stereo release
A special edition release (that came with a few posters)
25 anniversairy edition..

CD:
Original CD release (imported from England too >.>)
Remasterd release
and the SACD release...

so yeah.. they did a good job a marketing this album.. But hey, they are a good band.. I'm curious as to what the quadraphonic version sounds like.. I'm sure, though, it sounds similar to the multi-channel layer on the SACD release.

I've been an avid Q reader for years now. It's my bible as far as finding new music is concerned, the radio and MTV predominantly play repetitive bilge. But I agree with your views on the articles of late. Every issue this year seems to have been filled with polls. Whilst they're entertaining to a degree it's annoying having them in every issue. Someone actually wrote in to complain about this but they just took the piss outta them, as they seem to do with every letter, which resulted in me loosing a bit more respect for them.

There is an article in the current issue of Q talking of rumours about a possible Pink Floyd re-union tour including Roger Waters. Better start saving for those (what will be stupidly priced) tickets now.

Mentioning the "Spice Girls" in a top fifty list of ANYTHING, aside from "most macabre"... leaves me writhing in agony. This post took 15 minutes to write.
mobius
It must have been the lofty eloquence that took so long to craft.
Canar
To those complaining about placement: did you actually read the article? It's very clear why things were placed where they were.

The magazine sized up each band's performance with a points system that measured sales of their biggest album, the scale of their biggest headlining show and the total number of weeks spent on the UK album chart. Difficulties in finding accurate and reliable figures mean it is virtually impossible to compare on total album sales alone.

That was the dumbest TOP X list I've seen for quite a while. Thank you for posting the link, funny reading.

Enjoy!
