Full Version: Looking to buy new receiver

Here's my current speaker setup:

http://www.cerwinvega.com/products/homeaud...ries/avs51.html

They're a little weird(4 ohm impedence), but sound great. I've been trying refurbed Harman Kardon DPR-1001Z's, but the last two they have sent me don't work. So I am getting a refund and buying a new analog receiver. Most of my music outputs from my computer(Audigy 2 ZS), and I watch DVD's from my computer to my TV and my old set of speakers(2 DCM 16S's).

Now, I've got some cash to blow, so I was looking at some mid range models from Denon, Marantz, and HK. I'm not sure I want to give HK my money again, and something on the back of Marantz's receivers told me to stay away. More specifically, the minimum 6 ohm impedence printed right under the speaker connections. I don't understand, if I hook my speakers up to it, something going to blow up?

From what I know, Denon doesn't have that warning(no one rates power at 4 ohms), and I like the look of their 2805 model. Can anyone make some suggestions as to what would be a good receiver to buy? Spending limit is about 1K, and I'm open to anything(even though I specified those 3 companies above).

Thanks

Easy: Denon 5805!

OK, so it's a little over $1k ($6k). But isn't it just.. huge?

Actually, looking at a larger version of the picture of the rear it shows a minimum speaker impedance of 6 ohms. Perhaps that's a reasonable restriction for a unit with 10 amplifiers.

(I tried to follow up to my last post minutes after I posted it, but then the forums went down. I thought I might have broken them!)

Looking at the manual for the Denon 2805, it looks like it also has a 6 ohm restriction.

The problem with using 4 ohm speakers on a receiver rated for higher impedances is that the amplifiers may become overheated and shut down.

Your speakers are likely to be the limiting factor, to be blunt. Try a Panasonic SA-XR series digital receiver, and get another sound card which can feed it a good digital signal. These receivers are multichannel, but I'm not sure how multichannel works on them. Check on the audio circles.
