why don't you read the recommendations or the documents coming with LAME (at least from rarewares)? it is answerd there.
you might as well use the -V switches instead of -preset in this version.

Why not --preset insane (--preset CBR 320) ?

the new 3.96.1 use q0 as -V0 not the 3.90.3 'S q2
