Hi Jeremy,

I'm still having the same problem, though a little later down the line. The CD ripped ok, and flacattack started flac, but somewhere in the verify stage flacattack crashed. I was left with no wave or flac file, but the Cuesheet & Log file were created.

Also, is it necessary to have to do a "%artist - %album" when stating the flac destination directory? I ask this because I did not include that when I set the flac destination. All I had was D:\My Music\New Downloads as the destination directory.

Thanks!

Dirk

Do you mean when the flac executable was verifying the encoding?

No, it is not necessary to have %artist - %album. It can be anything you want.

Edit: It looks like you're ripping to an image file.

Go ahead and post your complete ini file contents and I'll have a look to see if there is anything wrong there.

Yes, while flac was verifying in the Command window. It seems that before that verify completed is when flacattack crashed with same debugging box, and process id - thread id etc info. I am ripping to an image.

I am fairly certain that .ini is correct, as I did check it, but I will post it here later today when I return home from work.

Thanks again for all of your hard work! Also, "fagui" looks terrific, nice job!

I think I know what's happening here. You are telling EAC to put the files in that D:\My Music\New Downloads directory, aren't you? (the same location you have listed in your ini). I'll see what I can do about it, but for now you might want to try and tell EAC another directory. If that's not what is wrong, I'll keep looking for a solution. I just tried a test run with those directories being the same and I get the error exacly when you say you were getting it with just the cue sheet and log remaining.

Thanks for the debugging help.

Should I try something very simple like: C:\ or D:\ ?

Edit: Indeed, both EAC & flacattack have the same destination.
ponchorage
What is happening is:

1. Flacattack is checking to see if there is already a file in the destination directory with that filename. If there is, it deletes it.

2. It then moves the flac file from the source to the destination directory.

Since the source and destination are the same in step 1, the flac file gets deleted. When it goes to move the file in step 2, it no longer exists, so that is where the error comes from.

You should be safe with anything as long as there are no files ending in .log and it is not the same as the destination directory specified in the ini file. I just use my My Documents/My Music folder and then the files get moved to C:\music.
ponchorage
I am however making a fix so that you can use the same directory.

Edit: See the first post for some issues concering this. Version 1.02 is now available.

I recommend doing so. However, if you aren't having any problems you might be okay with your old file.
dannyd
I was in the process of ripping using FLACAttack and EAC but the process of compression aborted with the message 'Application has generated exception which could not be handled' The title of the message was 'Common Language Runtime Debugging'. Debugging was attempted by FLACAttack but this failed - 'Error Code -0x2 (2) Please check computer settings cordbg.exe !a 0xfff 10bd3'. No log was written though I had opted for this in FLACAttack. The FLACAttack DOS screen indicated that verification was OK though compression did not take place (EAC functioned normally)! I noticed that two cue sheets with different names were generated for my selection of tracks from an album. I worked carefully through the Installation and Use instructions on the web site and believe I filled in the fields correctly. If anybody can shed any light on the problem, I would be most grateful.
ponchorage
When EAC prompted you for a place to save your files, did you choose the same folder as you chose in the flacattack.ini file (possibly using the GUI)? If so, try a different temporary folder when EAC prompts you to save the files and that should fix your problem.

Thanks for that. I tried doing that but still no joy. One track was converted into FLAC but then FLACAttack crashes on the second track. This happened repeatedly.
ponchorage
Okay, I'll see what I can figure out. Anybody else experiencing this problem when ripping to individual tracks?

Could you please post or send me a copy of your flacattack.ini file?

If you double-click on an INI file by default it should open in Notepad I believe.

If not, right-click, choose "Open With" and use Notepad, or open Notepad (or any text editor) and then drag the file into the editor window.

I'm still looking into this, but one other thing is that you can't embed the cue when encoding to individual files.

Thanks for that. Yes I take your point. I thought that as the embedding option was greyed out (because I selected the individual files option), it would not influence matters) but I was wrong! Anyway I tried again - this time without embedding selected. However again I ran into problems. The encoding process failed immediately.

You are right, having "embed log" checked will not make a difference. I just thought that maybe you thought you could embed a log using individual files.

I'll continue to try and figure out what's wrong here.

I'll fix that in the next release. Thanks for the heads up. You can change it manually (if you haven't already) by just opening up the flacattack.ini file directly and making the change.
ponchorage
@ dannyd:

I'm pretty sure I figured our part of your problem. You have chosen to use :

[LOG_INFO]
FLAC_LOG_FILENAME=%artist - %title

and

[CUE_INFO]
FILENAME=%artist - %title

I'm not sure why you are using %artist - %title when ripping to individual files. This will just give the file a name for example, using the CD Heavier Things by John Mayer with Bigger Than My Body as an example track title:

John Mayer - Bigger Than My Body

instead of

John Mayer - Heavier Things

This causes problems because everytime Flacattack runs (once for each file) it has to make adjustments to the cue file. It figures out the name of the cue file by using the format you choose (in your case, %artist - %title). So, the first time it runs on the first track it would look for:

John Mayer - Bigger Than My Body

and then on the second track it would look for whatever the name of the second track may be:

John Mayer - Clarity

Since the cue file was initially renamed to be

John Mayer - Bigger Than My Body

Flacattack can't find John Mayer - Clarity.cue because it does not exist and then Flacattack will close.

For future reference to everyone:
Do not use %title or %tracknumber when naming your cue or log files.

I hope this helps. Could you please try it out and let me know if you have success? Thanks for letting me know about this issue. I'll document it in the next release.

Many thanks for that. I appreciate the trouble you are taking. I am not totally clear as to what form the cue should take for individual file encoding if %title and %tracknumber are not to be used. Obviously it is helpful for one to know what a file is smile.gif . One pre-set (as I understand it) is %tracknumber - %artist - %title but are you saying that title and tracknumber should not be used even in conjunction with artist? I did try that pre-set but was unsuccessful so I suspect that variant may not work either.
ponchorage
You can use %title and %tracknumber for other filenames such as the flac filenames and ogg filenames, etc. The problem only occurs when you try and name the cue and log files with these variables. You will only have one cue and log file per album, thus they are a representation of the entire album and not of any particular song. Their contents give details about all of the songs of the album. Have you done some research here as to what cue files are? The filename I typically give to cue files is %artist - %album. This will give the file a unique name for each cd that I rip since an artist is most likely not to produce more than one album with the same title (although I know it does happen, ie Led Zeppelin, Seal, etc). Hope that helps.

Thanks very much for that. I understand the position now (not before time:)). I have used cue sheets for image files when ripping whole albums but not for individual files/tracks when ripping part of an album. Hence my confusion. I did not comprehend properly how they worked in relation to individual files/tracks. Anyway, as you suspected, this was indeed the source of the problem. The program is working a treat now.
ponchorage
Glad to hear it. Yeah, the cue sheet when used with individual flac files works much like a playlist. It is a little different, but same idea, as when using an image file.

I would like to use Flacattack to encode individual files to FLAC and MP3 simultaneously.

I have tried Flacattack 1.02 but can’t get it to just encode FLAC let alone MP3. From reading this thread it would seem that Flactattack is dependant upon both the flacattack configuration as well as the EAC configuration.

Could some post a working EAC profile and flacattack.ini that encodes FLAC so that I can start with a known working configuration?

Try the Flacattack installation webpage: http://www.uninformative.com/flacattack/installation.php

This is a good place to start.

Sorry. sad.gif The site will be down for a little while. However, if you have already downloaded Flacattack (which I'm sure you have), then the setup.txt file that comes bundled with it has the same instructions that can be found on the web page mentioned above.

The flacattack.ini file that is included is also a working one -- it is the one that I use. I've thought about posting an EAC profile, but you would also have to manually change any information concerning the drives on your computer after loading it.

Hi Ponchorage & others

Am I right in assuming flacattack can't deal with what is called a 'range' in EAC - a selection of tracks ripped as a single file? I want to use it to embed cue sheets in them...

Yes I have read the documentation on the web site.

Using the Flacattack GUI makes changes to the ini file very simple. I can only think that I have some type of conflict in my EAC configuration.

Having both a a known working configuration for EAC & Flacattack is a simple place to start. Posting both would be helpful aid to problem resolution.

Try and see. I think it should actually work. You'll need to first create a cue sheet manually:

1. Action-->Create CUE Sheet-->Single WAV File.
2. Action-->Copy Range.

Let us know if that works.

I have posted my EAC config file on the website. You can try that out with the flacattack.ini file that comes with the normal download. Just adjust the paths in your ini file to match your setup but leave any settings you are not using alone. Like I mentioned above, after loading the EAC config file, you will need to adjust your drives' settings.

Edit: The website is back up as well.

Hi, I sure I doing something wrong but I just cannot figure out what it is. The problem is I cannot get flacattack to compress my wave file to flac files using EAC.
This is the Flacattack dos window error I get.

Flacattack 1.02, Copyright © 2004-2005 Jeremy Hicks

Location of .ini file is not valid

I am running win98SE, I am using EAC and foobar2000 and I have read through EAC, foobar2000, flacattack guide and HydrogenAudio forums. I can compress fine with Eac command line.
Program, including path, used for compression: C:\Burners\flac\flac.exe
Additional command line options: -6 -V -T "artist=%a" -T "title=%t" -T "album=%g" -T "date=%y" -T "tracknumber=%n" -T "genre=%m" %s

EAC flacattack
Program, including path, used for compression: C:\Burners\flac\flacattack.exe
Additional command line options: ["C:\Burners\flac\flacattack.ini" %s "%a" "%t" "%g" "%y" "%n" "%m" %o]

I took the [ out but that didn’t help. I also downloaded EAC Profile off of ponchorage website to try and see if maybe I wasn’t copying and pasting off of the web site correctly, but when I tried to change to that profile I got a ‘Illegal Operation’ Unhandled Exception at EACwnd.472 > INDEX RANGE

Thanks in advance

Those brackets should never be used. They were just to show that everything inside them should be used. Did you remove the quotes from the command line parameters? You should not, they are required. I've never tested Flacattack on win98. Flacattack checks the location of the flacattack.ini file that you put in the EAC command line to see if the file exists. If it does not, then it returns the error you are reporting: "Location of .ini file is not valid."

One thing that might be causing problems is:

CODE

If you are ripping to individual files and use this setting, then after the second file is encoded, it will just replace the first. For example:

Artist: Radiohead

Each track will be named Radiohead - OK Computer

You need something to distinguish each track, such as the track title (%title) or tracknumber (%tracknumber).
