Its for the parents, who have an Mpeg4 decoding dvd player. Although it doesn't decode Xvid very well (irrespective of xvid settings) (AoOIGHha).

I do most of my dvd-rips in xvid, I often cant be bothered to rerip the whole dvd and do all the other stuff again (I followed the everwicked guide).. Besides, Pat and Gary wouldn't notice a transcode from Xvid to DivX

I tried just simply loading the Video in VirtualDubMod, and then saving it out (Full processing) with DivX configured to do its job, but it just complains that "Video format is not correct, Error (-2)" or something like that. (ARrioGHhAAa)

You should set it to fast recompress, that way you don't convert from YV12 to RGB and back again.

You aren't cropping or resizing to a weird resolution are you? Maybe the input file has a weird resolution? Strictly speaking your width and height should be both divisible by 16. It is ok, if they are divisible by like 8 too but you will lose some quality maybe. If it is like divisible by 4 or 2 you may run into problems. If it isn't even divisible by 2 this will definitely not work at all. Mind telling us what the resolution is? I think this is what this error is caused by.

I am 99.99% sure it is divisible by 16, as that is how it is set up in Gordian Knot. I will let you know the resolution later though..

So Xvid can be any resolution whilst DivX has to be a multiple of 8?

I think I'll just rip DVD again and encode to DivX to start with.. Although I wouldn't mind an answer

DivX 5 can decode XviD properly (maybe a few features are not supported, but still decodeble)

Nope, tried that! The player does play it, its just really really wierd. Static details flick from place and then home, and movement leaves trails from time to time. Oddly enough, this happens regardless of the options I set in Xvid

Well, the requirement for yv12 which is the colorspace for mpeg4 is 2x4 but it would be just crazy to do that. I think xvid can do this but to be honest I haven't ever tried. I have no idea what divx allows.
EDIT: Lev please post your entire avisynth script, xvid settings, and the hardware player you are trying to play your movie in. It is difficult to know what the problem is without this information. I have a hard time believing that any xvid settings cause this behavior and divx is ok.

Well, not that I think anyone is interested, but since I formatted my HD the other day and reinstalled everything.... It works.
