Hey everybody,

Is there a VQF 2.0++ 192 Kbps Winamp 2.x plugin anywhwere?

I have Nero 5.5.9.0 which can now encode vqf up to 192kbps but none of the vqf plugins i have found will work with winamp2x.

Thanks,
RD

Nope. It all depends on Ahead releasing a decoder SDK or something like that.

But I would believe NeroMIX can play VQF2.0++ files.

Why would you want to create a 192kbps VQF anyways? ???

to do listening tests, i believe?

Correct me if I am wrong, but how would a 192kbps VQF file be that much different from a 192kbps WMA? WMA uses a modified vector-quantisation format for encoding, if I remember correctly. In any case, at 192kbps, you might as well use --aps, MPC's standard profile, or AAC.

I would personally be interested in seeing some ABX results for this new VQF format, if anybody actually has the time (or interest) to do them. Last I heard, VQF was a lost cause. ???

The only good VQF plugin for Winamp2 is by Peter Pawlowski / PP / zZzZzZz (you all know him tongue.gif);
and the webpage about it was by me smile.gif.
But Peter dropped that project (it was done anyway).
And apart from that he really hates the VQF format, so don't count on it too much...
even if there would be a free decoder SDK available...

I spent few minutes testing VQF HQ 192kbps mode found in Nero, here are ABX results:

bassline: 12/12 (bass is distorted, sounds like it's clipping)
castanets: 12/12 (heavy smearing, even on the guitar)
Tristania - Deadlocked: 15/16 (noise pumping with piano in the beginning)

First two samples are (well) known problem samples, but third sample was something I randomly picked from random CD I had at hand. I don't think this codec is good for anything.

Thanx guys,

I just wanted to do some listening tests... i agre vqf has a dismal future...

Not good for 192kbps!! Then again, I'm sure nobody expected any different biggrin.gif

It is used for VERY low bitrates (8-16kbps) MPEG4 audio.

At least, useful for something. :-P

Have you listened to Garf's buttcrack-low bitrate Ogg Vorbis files?

I'd like to see VQF beat those at 3.2kbps!!!! biggrin.gif

It might beat, but, unfortunately, there's no publicly available MPEG4 TwinVQ encoder.

Besides, for these bitrates in MPEG4, you should probably use CELP. (Unfortunately, no good implementation available as well)
