Full Version: Is it possible to add chapter to an AVI?

I know that this may be a stupid question, but bear with me since I'm totally new to DVD ripping.

I managed to use AutoGK to rip and encode a DVD to XviD and MP3. The problem is that the resulting AVI file does not have the chapter division that the original DVD has.

Is it possible to add chapters to an AVI file? What tool and procedure should I use? Does any player support AVI playback with chapters?

If this is not possible, what other container do you recommend?

thanks
Bonzi
Yes, you can add chapters with avimuxgui as for how to play it... Well I really don't know if you could say play it in MPC and be able to skip though by chapters. Maybe someone could tell us if this is possible. As for other container formats which you could choose, the best choices are mp4 and matroska. Matroska is probably the easiest for you. I would use mkvtoolnix to mux and MPC to playback. If you want to go the mp4 route you will need to use the Nero muxer. This requires that you know how to use graphedit which isn't so bad.

Thank you for your reply Bonzi.

I was trying to mux the chapters with VirtualDubMod but I had no success... The tool is too advanced to my current knowledge state laugh.gif

I'm really interested in skipping through chapters in a AVI (or matroska). Maybe someone could help pointing to compatible players or filters...

I thought with AVIMuxGUI the chapters are only used with MKV files. Don't think it is possible to have chapters in avi, well other than I think with Vidomi.

nope, no chapters possible in AVI

but if you know how to use AVImuxGUI its quite easy to make Matroska files smile.gif
just select output as matroska file instead of avi.

you can play them in MPC or get general DirectShow-support if you download the Matroska pack

yeah, matroška is your best bet,
it is possible to hack together a simple html/javascript navigator for mplayer2 - like 'jump to chapter N' type of navigation, let me know if your interested and i will try to find the code (windows/ie only).

p.s. (also one could perform a similar hack with avisynth)

Not a big problem since I was able to convert the AVIs to Matroska quite easily with mkvtoolnix. Chapter addition is really straightforward with this tool rolleyes.gif

However I am having some problems playing back the matroska file through DS players, specifically RealPlayer and WMP10. With MPC it works flawlessly.

Do I really need to install the Matroska full pack? Is there any problem installing it over a previous ffdshow installation? Is it possible to get proper playback if you already have ffdshow installed?

The thing is that I already have ffdshow installed (latest version) and I don't feel like installing the Matroska full pack over it because it might break something... So I installed the matroska lite pack but that didn't work. All I get is no video and skipping audio...

Thanks for your help and patience because there's almost zero information about this on the internet...

edit: clarification

i would just use MPC and install nothing else, but thats just me smile.gif
stephanV
you can also just disable the ffdshow part of the full pack (as you can any other part)

Oh, I see. So the chapter thing is only for matroska. Sorry about that. I thought maybe alex had figured out some way to make it work. He has a way of doing these things ... tongue.gif. Anyway, matroska is probably the best bet like was said earlier.

I use the function of Bsplayer creating a .bsi file where I can put a lot of options for playback.

I extract the chapters with ChapterXtractor.
