If by "multi," you mean "two," then yes.

Multichannel is part of the mpeg-2 extensions of mp3. However, unlike for mp2, it has never been implemented.
In the ISO compliance testings, there is the only publically available multichannel mp3 track. This track was synthetically produced, not created by an encoder. This means that untill now, there does not exist any multichannel mp3 encoder.
Note: some programmers might want one day to create a multichannel mp3 multiplexer. This would allow creation of multichannel mp3 files using regular stereo encoders.

isn't there also the relatively recent hack by FhG to put a matrixed multichannel track into a 2-channel file? (rather like pro-logic II or similar systems).

Yes, but AFAIK, it hasn't become public yet.
And unless it ends up well documented and at least decoder sources are released, it'll flop just like MP3pro did.

We can have an mp3 Surround Encoder/Decoder now...
made in Fraunhofer.

Their demos sound great...

finally a multichannel mp3 encoder/player

and the multichannel mp3 files play fine in other players like normal stereo mp3 files

now, all we need is a directshow filter/codec
And there has been a "Multichannel MP3" logo in PowerDVD's splash screen for years. Is it the same as Fraunhofers "MP3 surround"?

This is not multichannel mp3, this is surround mp3

Meanwhile there is also
another link to the MP3 surround format website.
While it's called MP3 surround, Fraunhofer, Thomson and Agere Systems claim:
– Full
multi-channel capability (incl. 5.1 format)
– Complete backward compatibility to existing MP3 players and devices
– Data rates for multi-channel sound comparable to those for current stereo MP3
edit: small correction
about "multichannel stereo" like DPL2, Logic7:
if you have an multichannel source like 5.1 ac3 or waves,
you can use since years Dark Avenger's
HeadAC3he
to make a DS2 stereo downmix, which contains separated rear channels, which can be decoded by dpl2 or Logic7 decoders/amps.
That this stereo track can be encoded to mp2, mp3 or whatever, is simple.
DSPGuru's Besweet should be able to do the same like HeadAC3he.
dunno, if a true multichannel mp3 would be successful in market, as ac3 is a standard and common at comparable quality like mp3 since long time. hm, though, there aren't any pure ac3-stream (ac3 without video) hardware players around?
maybe mp3-multi has a chance, if they offer the decoding in amps, and other hardware, dvd/mp3-players, or even portables.

Yes, I got that, but what is MP3 Multichannel that PowerDVD has been advertising for years, then?

I am not sure, but I think it is a filter similar to the 3D ones. It simply "splits" the stereo signal into multiple channels. You can also virtually create a stereo file out of a mono file by applying some filters.

I think this just means DPL/DPLII dematrixing.

Seems that Spatial audio that Fhg was developing last years is out.

Not at all, it's currently being standardized.
MP3 Surround very much looks like a last attempt to sucker a few people into buying a proprietary solution instead of an open, standardized one. (like MP3Pro and DolbyAAC)

I suspect that it could be a good way to convey experimentation over a wide range of average people, in order to properly adjust technology for its real target.
As an example, I suspect that mp3pro was a kind of giant test for sbr, in order to adjust it for HE-AAC.

The "mp3 surround" encoder decoder plugin and sample are available here.
http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/amm/download/...termsofuse.htmlthey have a 5.1 wav sample for testing in encoder and a some mp3 files
encoded with mp3 encoder
isnt mp3 surround supposed to create 5.1 mp3 files.
Please clarify i am still having doubts.
as the player that is provided at this site shows 5.1 sign while playing the sample
files provided at the site but really no audio is heard
did any one try out the samples at the fraunhofer site.
please test it i am wating for your replies
foobar , dbpoweramp tell that they are 2 channel

hm it seems as if ffmpeg includes the capability to decode real (!) mpeg standard multichannel mp3
maybe someone can test this with that file, i cant download it

The source is of good quality.
What output found yourselves for the separation of the channels.
