Re-statement: MP3Gain can read the ReplayGain APE tags written by foobar2000.
But I've finally given in to pressure and will be adding ID3v2 tag support in MP3Gain sometime soon-ish.
Thank you, I'm sure that would be much appreciated - I consciously chose to avoid using APE tags with my MP3s because of incompatibilities with my portable player.
On a somewhat related note : Is there a simple way for me to batch / mass convert my ID3 ReplayGain tags to APE ReplayGain tags? This would obviously help me to use MP3Gain...
A final question regarding the actual subject title of this thread - that which lead me here in the first place! - I've noticed that foobar will copy across all tags, when transcoding via convert from one format to another { say FLAC to MP3 }, apart from the ReplayGain tags. I read a thread on this board, some time ago, that said this was intentional because the ReplayGain values would not longer be accurate on a file containing a different compression method due to each codecs peculiarities... Whilst I basically understand this argument from a perfectionist point of view, I have found that in practise the differences in RepPlayGain values between the FLAC file and the MP3 or OGG are so slight that they would not make any noticable difference - or at least the difference would be entirely tolerable to me.
I'm basically looking for a way to minimise having to run my files through too many processes when transcoding. I'd like to be able to simply select a large collection of FLACs and transcode them to whatever format I like, without having to recalculate the ReplayGain values on a second pass
And come to think of it, having an option to apply MP3Gain type functionality in the same pass would be fantastic too!
