hi.

i have a simple question. how can i make replaygayned files from noreplaygained ones? now i do this at that way:

1. load *.mp2 to foobar2000
2. right click, -> scan per file track gain
3. convert -> run convertion

so i get replaygained *.wav from notreplaygained *.mp2.

the question is: how can i do *.mp2 -> *.mp2 with replaygain ?

replaygain simply adds volume values stored in the tag of your audio files, the actual audio file is not altered in any way, theres no need to convert the files.
Mindaxiz
if you are doing a scan per track you need to go to foobars options/playback and change the replaygain mode to track gain. that way foobar will use the trackgain on playback

may be you dont understand me smile.gif
th question was:
how can i do *.mp2 -> *.mp2 with replaygain?

it means, that in the end of process of replaygain and conversion, i want to get replaygained _file_ on disc, not in playlist.

sorry for my english. wink.gif

if you are burning to a CD --> scan your files with replaygain, go to options/components/audio CD writer (check "use replaygain"), then go to playback preferences and select weather you want it to use track or album gain, and finally go back to your playlist, select the files you want to burn, right click/Write Audio CD (note that you need nero installed to use the cd writer)

you can also try Burrrn

thats if i still understand your quistion correctly wink.gif

I think he asks how to apply replaygain to tracks, that is, the actual music data to be altered. Applying replaygain when transcoding is done when 'replaygain' is checked but the question here is about the simplest way when one doesn't want to change the compression type (no transcoding).

I haven't tried it myself yet but I am wondering the same thing.

So, Has anyone figured this out yet, I also want to apply the replaygain to the mp3 without re-encoding the file again, because I want to use it for my portable which doesnt support gain/normalize.

hmmm wouldn't this program be interesting wink.gif

MP3Gain?
RageX
o.... crap ^^;; I thought mp3gain was just like replaygain.
O yeah btw, can u somehow use the replaygain that i have done in foobar already and use mp3gain to just apply those values, or somekinda plugin for foobar that applys the rg info?

MP3Gain can read the ReplayGain tags written by foobar2000. So if you have files you've already scanned with foobar, just load them into MP3Gain and the pre-calculated values should show up. Then you can use "Track Gain" or "Album Gain" to alter the mp3s at will.

This is not my experience. Can you confirm?

I'm currently attempting to "apply" my foobar ReplayGain values so that my portable can read them - a foobar plugin WOULD be preferable - but MP3Gain does NOT see my ReplayGain tags. It has to rescan / recalculate them all... .. . And "all" is at least 80Gb worth if I only bother with the files on my portable!

If what you say is true, please provide some more detail, thanks.

P.S. Here is evidence to the contrary : http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....ndpost&p=265928

By the looks of that post, MP3Gain will read existing replaygain data from APEv2 tags, but not ID3.

From what I remember, if you do have APE tags with replaygain data you should see the analysis value already filled in after you add them to MP3Gain. All you need to do then is hit the button that applies the gain to your files.

Re-statement: MP3Gain can read the ReplayGain APE tags written by foobar2000.

But I've finally given in to pressure and will be adding ID3v2 tag support in MP3Gain sometime soon-ish.

To be honest, biven my track record lately, I'm not sure how soon "soon-ish" will turn out to be. But it shouldn't be too hard (knock on wood!) to just plug in someone else's pre-written id3 tagging library...

Thank you, I'm sure that would be much appreciated - I consciously chose to avoid using APE tags with my MP3s because of incompatibilities with my portable player.

On a somewhat related note : Is there a simple way for me to batch / mass convert my ID3 ReplayGain tags to APE ReplayGain tags? This would obviously help me to use MP3Gain...

A final question regarding the actual subject title of this thread - that which lead me here in the first place! - I've noticed that foobar will copy across all tags, when transcoding via convert from one format to another { say FLAC to MP3 }, apart from the ReplayGain tags. I read a thread on this board, some time ago, that said this was intentional because the ReplayGain values would not longer be accurate on a file containing a different compression method due to each codecs peculiarities... Whilst I basically understand this argument from a perfectionist point of view, I have found that in practise the differences in RepPlayGain values between the FLAC file and the MP3 or OGG are so slight that they would not make any noticable difference - or at least the difference would be entirely tolerable to me.

I'm basically looking for a way to minimise having to run my files through too many processes when transcoding. I'd like to be able to simply select a large collection of FLACs and transcode them to whatever format I like, without having to recalculate the ReplayGain values on a second pass

And come to think of it, having an option to apply MP3Gain type functionality in the same pass would be fantastic too!

To convert tag types, change the setting in foobar to the desired tag format, right click on the files, and choose database > rewrite file tags from database.

Unfortunately, I've been hesitant to do this - although I will give it a try shortly - as I've heard that this removes ID3 tags in the process. I need to actually retain the ID3 tags. I ony require the ReplayGain tags in APE format. Nevertheless I've so far been able to use MP3Tag to duplicate my ID3s across to APE whilst retaining the ID3s by changing a preference. MP3Gain now reads the ReplayGain tags... Result!
