i got this one song well album and the songs bitrates are jumping around like this for example 192 224 256 244 260 256 320 256 224 192 160 320 160 320 224 256 320 256 244 ..... is that ABR ?

iam not fussy on bitrates what matters to me is the size of the file and iam happy with a 128 bitrate thats why i want to change my files to all 128 bitrate ..... see thing is i only got a 40gig hard drive so i cant really go for the higher bitrates and plus i dont have a fancy sound card my sound in intergrated into my motherboard.

anyway
thanks for your advice and help on helping me.

you might get a better soundcard and a bigger hd someday, remember that. prices are always falling, so keep that in mind.
if size is an issue, you might as well use "-V 3" what will result in medium to low variable bitrates that might suit you fine. but see for yourself.
see the recommeded settings for further questions.
"reencode" ... what you are talking about here is transcoding, what does lead to quality degraditon. you better rip the cds again if you own them and encode then again.

most probably vbr, could be abr, yes.

you don't have to mess (and should NOT) mess with the advanced settings, just use
"lame options - expert - tick "only use custom options" and past 'n copy your commandline."

besides - welcome to the forum smile.gif you might to inform yourself a bit more, read the FAQs.

edit: clarification
Jojo
keep in mind that a mp3 which has been created from another mp3 (or other lossy format) will sound even worse than the same file in the same bitrate that came from a lossless source (like a CD).

yes, it's ABR or VBR...which are both variable bitrates...you might want to get a decent software though...even Windows Media Player doesn't switch bitrates like that...it also displays the correct length of a song the second it plays!

while this is indeed annoying and doesn't help HA to be a good resource of knowledge, some people are newbies if it comes to internet, boards and general recommended behavior on the net.
maybe a simple: 'bad boy, don't do it again, now go and play' is enough.
people will learn. if not, well, then some sort of 'punishment' (i.e. not responding, warn, whatever) is in place IMO.

Even I'm not a fan of dBpowerAMP I'd recommend using it.
For me it's the easiest way I could imagine.
Yes, there is always quality degration. You should consider re-ripping it.
