I have a fairly simple question regarding artifacts in MP3.
since a long time (basicly since I started encodeing myself) I noticed what I believe are known problems (artifacts) with mp3s.
what I mean is that certain parts of the vocals do sound very different (in a bad way) compared to the original. most noticeable this is with the letter "s" and also "z" in German. in bad cases it also noticable with the music.
it sounds too sharp and rough and somehow cut down and at the same time smeared and unclear. I know this sounds rather unhelpfull and unprecise, but I can't describe it better.
the problem is very obvious at lower bitrates and gets less obvious at higher bitrates (how surprising wink.gif ) but is often still there.

now, what I want to know - does this kind of artifact have a name? is it due to a too low lowpass, is it actually called something?

thank you.
Gabriel
You are German, aren't you?
German speech is specially sensitive to the sibilants alteration. Now, you know why there are some German speech samples in the SQAM samples.
