Full Version: Video In 0.9?

I was looking though a few old posts about adding video support to Foobar and it was concluded that it just can't be done properly in Foobar's current state. However every time I hear 0.9 mention I hear talk of big changes and development.

Do you think it will be possible to develop a video plug-in for 0.9? Do you think it'll ever be possible to add video?

I'm asking because I recently put a few dvds on my PC and MPC's play list is a nightmare. Think of how great it would be to have another play list containing all you video?

I know a few people will be thinking "I don't need another component bloating Foobar" but we live in a world of CPU's measure in GHz and Gigs of RAM, so I really don't see that as an issue.

It would of course need new video demuxer/decoder/renderer architecture rather than DirectShow, to fluidly cooperate with the rest of the player, which I have exactly zero motivation to do.
Not to mention maintaining new demuxer/decoder components.

I don't understand why it would be attractive to add video support. Probably because I don't spend very much time watching videos, and when I do, it's usually movies. The latter lasts for about 1.5 hours or more, while an average song lasts for about 4 minutes. Cartoons, music videos and general video clips are shorter than a movie, but still pretty long, and that's the reason why I don't understand why you need a player like this to watch them. How many do you watch in a row? Do you need features and plugins like: shuffle, playlist generator, masstagger, TAGZ functionality and such?

I'm not trying to be rude or make fun of anyone, I just want to understand why.

Btw: I usually use WMP 6.4 for video clips, and sometimes MPC, VLC and BSplayer. That more than covers my needs on the computer, and for movies I use my Xbox.

The ONLY reason I could think of (for me personaly of course), is for music video clips. Having a playlist with all my music videos captured from mtv/ downloaded from the net would indeed be pretty nice, but that doesn't justify the work that would have to be done to integrate such a feature cleanly.

Since "we live in a world of CPU's measure in GHz and Gigs of RAM" just use Winamp, WiMP, MPC, or whatever suits your fancy for video. 'nuff said.

FYI it's very easy with foo_openwith!
Configure it eg. like this (don't forget the first space: " /add /play", not "/add /play")
Naturally you can move the context menu item via the core prefs.
Then select your video(s) in foobar's playlist then send it (them) to mpc in 2 clicks.

@ QHOBBES 2.0; Like I said, MPC doesn't suit my needs and Winamps video is very very clumsy. Do you think if I was satisfied with a video player I would enquire about it here? Foobar isn't good just because it's 'lite' ;-)

@ zZzZzZz; I don't suppose a thanks from me would be enough to motivate you? Or how about I send you some $$ for a few beers? :-) Seriously, you don't think it's going to happen then? That's a shame.

How about no ?

"No" is an excellent answer.

Any answer works; even if video support was implemented in foobar, it'd be modular so it wouldn't affect users who don't want it one bit. Kind of like the current visualization architecture.

Peter's just completely uninterested in implementing video. If someone were to develop some proof-of-concept code with simple mpeg-1 decoding or something, there's a chance he could be persuaded to do something with it.

Edit: woot~!11eleventyone 800 posts!

Couldn't have said it any better.
Really. foobar2000 and <insertfavouritemediaplayer> are two completely different beasts.
foobar is just geared towards audio and most of its features only make sense in that context. Why add needless complexity? What's wrong with all the DirectShow based players?

Just my two worthless cents but...

Firstly, zZzZzZz will and should always make decisions as he sees fit since foobar is his baby.

Secondly, what if zZzZzZz did add a component for video? Not everyone wants it or even cares about it. Actually, it seems like those who want it are in a very very very very small minority [thank god]. Now we would have yet another component that will be need to be worked on and updated. I, for one, don't care at all to see video added to foobar. To me, I would see any work done on updating a video portion of the program as a waste and a loss to progress in the audio part of the program and it is, after all, an audio player.

Yes.

I do understand the wish for a Foobar2000-like video player, most video players I've come across either a nightmare for me to work with, or lack some (for me) important features. For me the only player I found satisfactory is MPC, but it has some irritating problems and lacks any kind of metadata handling/collection management.
Personally I don't think it would be a good idea to simply add video support to Foobar2000 though, as it would deviate too much from Foobar2000's core functionality. I would love a video player based on Foobar2000 though, provided the video support was of a similar high standard as the audio support of course.
Funkstar De Luxe
You say you have a problem with every other video player. THAT is the reason to add it to foobar.

Adding and maintaining proper video capabilities would require a lot of developer time, way more than some people seem to believe. A couple of free beers would hardly make up for all the effort. This discussion is useless.

It's not gonna happen, so this discussion is useless. Closed.
