Any chance of allowing PNG avatars? The main logo is already PNG, so why not the avatars?
My gorgeous new avatar is three times as big in GIF format.
GIF is like WMA, Xing and Blade, and PNG is like OGG Vorbis. You surely wouldn't force people into using WMA, huh .

I couldn't find any "file type selection" in the Admin panel.
So, I would believe it's hardcoded in vBulletin - I.E: it would be necessary to hack the board engine to allow PNG avatars.
Why don't you go with JPG in the meanwhile?

I can't do that.
If you want PNG in avatars, go crack the whip at Dibrom.

Actually it's "Compression factor" 99 in Paint Shop Pro 7.04. Same thing, I guess. Pretty, ain't it?

Using lossy jpeg for line art is like transcoding 128Kbit/s XiNG-mp3s to -q 6 vorbises.

I couldn't agree more. But I'm amazed at how many people actually do that all the time. Even well respected hardware sites occasionally compress screenshots (of Windows GUI) with lossy JPG, and the results are horrible. Even GIF would be better. PNG would just eat right through it.
But you know... I already have enough trouble telling people Audio Catalyst sucks ass... .

Hey, you can later increase quality decoding back to BMP and compressing with factor 30!

i know it's a joke but for me it's more like tuning LAME and MPCenc for the "needle impulse" test tone generated by one of the fellow HydrogenAudio'ists to show "deficiencies in ALL lossy encoders"
