When I first entered this forum about a year ago, I quickly learned that most people here are hard-working experts/geeks who are extremely easy to irritate with too nooby questions containing lots of technical data asked in an aggressive style.
My advice to any new members: In case you don't know anything, shut up and read the forums. You'll probarly not find exactly what you're looking for very fast, but checking this place out now and then is a long time investment that will pay off later, depending on how much time you have to read endless topics on command line parameters and processor optimized builds. If you feel like you might get cranky after 8 hrs without the thread flooding of useful answers, do not post here. I've learned most of the basic LAME-stuff on other forums like the "general discussions" section of
http://forums.winamp.com.
You can check the competense level of any other general computer forums by asking for an intro to mp3. If they tell you to use Musicmatch; do for Gods sake run like hell, duck and cover and that sort of stuff. But if someone tells you to use the LAME --alt-presets you know you're in a decent place.
