I captured some compressed video, and it is in .rm format. I would like to use another than Real player, and convert rm into avi or another common suitable video format, and do some edits afterwards. Any suggestions, please?

Try TINRA.

Could also try mencoder. you might need some extra dll's depending on what the rv file contains, but it can read rm/rmb files and can encode to avi using a variety of codecs and it is free.
