Full Version: Any DAP that supports gapless WMA/OGG?

I'm tired of waiting DAPs other than the Karma to support gapless MP3. There other codecs that are gapless by nature (WMA [encoded by WMP10], OGG, Atrac), but the DAP support is almost non-existence (other than Atrac). Are there any DAPs out there that can play gapless WMA and/or OGG? (Other than the Karma) It seems that iRiver, although can play OGG, doesn't play them gapless. How about the M3, Creative players, Dell's, etc? Any feedback would be appreciated.

The iRiver H100 series doesn't currently support gapless playback but once the Rockbox project for it gets finished if it does then it probably will. I know the Karma is gapless and I think the M3 is now but I'm not 100% on that.

I don't think the M3 is gapless yet. Check out this post and the next few posts.

I really wish it were, though...

Thanks for the link and the sample files. So it's not gaplees with MP3. How about ogg/WMA? Does the M3 play them gapless? You even hosted some files, but nobody is testing them... unsure.gif

This is sad. MD/Atrac, the most bashed hardware/codec lately, is years old and true gapless. We have these new DAPs, new codecs (wma/ogg) that can do gapless and they've been around for sometime, but it seems no DAP can even play them properly (except for the Karma). Ironically, people are asking for gapless MP3 support, which is not even gapless by nature.

Well, I thought of it, but the physical design is not appealing to me, and I had bad experience with Rio products in the past, mainly from their build quality. I also would like to know more about other DAPs and alternatives.

Now, does the Rio Carbon can play gapless WMA? It's the first Rio product that actually really appealing to me.

The Carbon doesn't play anything gapless. If looks are your guide to buying a DAP, then buy an Ipod and be done with it.

Even the Karma doesn't play WMA gapless. According to one of the Rio guys at Riovolution, all DAPs that play WMA use the same Microsoft WMA decoder which is a black box (cannot be modified by those who licence it) and does not support gapless. So until Microsoft sort out their portable decoder no DAP will do gapless WMA.

According to a review on The Register, Sony's new HD-based MP3 players (the ones which support finally MP3) will do gapless, but I'm not certain if they'll do gapless MP3 or only gapless ATRAC. Either way you'll have to use SonicStage, which is by all accounts awful, but it's good to finally get some choice in the gapless player market.

Now all Rio or Sony or whoever have to do is make a 40+gig gapless player and I'll replace my beloved Karma, assuming the new thing sounds anywhere near as good.

Did you even READ the TITLE of this thread? So, if I'm not a Karma fanboy, I must be an iPod fanboy. tongue.gif Can the iPod play anything gapless? No.
