What do I need to stop this error message popping up?
"ERROR (foo_input_std) : referenced file doesn't exist"
Some kind of plugin?

yeah, i think it's called foo_brain...
Seriously, it's quite clear english. File doesn't exist, so i'd go ahead and think that you might have for example cue sheets which don't point to valid files, as in foo cannot find the files the cue is pointing to.

You can also choose to delete such entries from your playlist. foobar2000 can do it for you. Look in the playlist menus for "Delete dead entries" or something similar.

That is the cue sheet reader telling you that a referenced file does not exist. Since the cue itself exists, it obviously won't do any good to remove dead entries from the playlist or the database.

Thank you. Still getting used to FB2K.

That's okay, this feature isn't well documented. Well, outside of topics that reference the exact error message, but you do need to dig a ways into the topics themselves to find the answer. (Assuming you searched for the error message in this forum.)
i'm getting this too a lot (mostly when doing some database search stuff etc, when it slows things down quite a lot).
is there any way to find these files? i guess not :/ ... only way would be to create your own plugin to do that (get metadbs of all cue files and then test them one by one and delete bad ones from db / playlists).
