I am looking to get a new DVD burner for my computer (my old CD-RW drive crapped out), and am wondering if I will encounter any problems since I am running Linux (Gentoo for those really interested)? I would plan on using K3B to burn, unless someone knows of a better program. Any recommendations for drives. Based on what I've read so far, the BenQ 1620 looks like a pretty good choice.

...essentially any drive works with 2.6.x (i'm using --mm 2.6 tree, working great)

i have a nec 25xx series (8x DL dvd burner)

k3b for complicated projects
k3b for dvd copy
k3b/grip (cdparanoia) for audio cd copy
growisofs for dvd data burn
cdrecord for cd data burn
cdrecord for cd audio burn

the only problem you will run into is that linux has very primitive burning/copying software compared to windows - although usually with the CLI you'll get better results than some generated frontend will.

I have a NEC ND-3500A, I love it. NEC DVD burners are very good.

Thanks for the info. I actually have to use kernel version 2.4 (2.4.26 currently) because of my modem drivers, will this cause any major problems?

I second a NEC 3500 or higher. Great burner. K3b supports it, so no CLI is necessary.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go order the NEC-ND3500A now.
