Building upon this album list format:
CODE
artist|[%album%]|[[%disc%.][$num(%tracknumber%,2).] ]$if2(%title%,%_filename_ext%)
Is it possible to have the albums sorted by %date% without actually having any %date% outputted?

yes, Album list panel preferences has a "Use custom sorting for tree items" option. So in your case, using :
CODE
[%artist%]|[%date%][%album%]|[[%disc%.][$num(%tracknumber%,2).] ]
in that field should work.

hmm i think that applies the custom sort to all the tree views. i only want it for one particular view.
