Does iTunes and/or iPods respect gain settings on mp3:s?

I have searched the forums a lot before posting this question, I can't believe that this questions never has been asked before!

Yes; it is impossible not to. The way MP3Gain changes the volume is by changing a value in the MP3 file called the "global gain," which is always there — MP3Gain is only gives it a higher or lower value depending on what you tell it to do.

But why does the softare page on the replaygain site say

No Players support Replay Gain - yet! Will you be the first?

What is the difference between replaygain and mp3gain? I have looked in the forums but couldn't find any final or conclusive answer.

MP3gain will work with an iPod, as it modifies the mp3. ReplayGain will not work with an iPod, as all it does is write a tag with the gain info which requires the decoder to read these tags and understand them.

Apple has its own version of ReplayGain with SoundCheck, which can be enabled in iTunes. If you already use Foobar and ReplayGain may I suggest that you try the foo_pod plug-in, as it can convert the ReplayGain info to SoundCheck info when you Sync your iPod using it.
