Last week, Apple Computer filed a patent application covering the iTunes Producer application and backend architecture, used for managing and sending music to the iTunes Music Store. The patent includes screenshots of the application, which Apple only distributes to authorized musicians and record labels.

One screenshot includes some interesting fields, such as Parental Advisory warnings, BPM, and various sales and copyright information. There's a button for adding Lyrics, which may indicate future support for lyric searching in iTunes Music Store.

Very interesting indeed... I still prefer WMP over iTunes but only just slightly.

I find it pretty naïve that Americans allow individual programs be patented as is even if they don't bring somekind of new and radical functionality.

huh.gif what's wrong with getting a patent so nobody else can copy your idea?

I have nothing against software patents as long as they are only applied to real inventions, just like other patents. What if somebody would have filed a patent for "apparatus for transporting multiple persons using an array of roads" in the early 20th century? We wouldn't have cars now. That is why you can't patent anything as an idea. You need to patent some technology behind the idea. That allows others to create similar products which still don't work as your machine. All in all, normal patents are about the inner workings of a system. Software patents are too wide to really suit to anything except for making money from other people/companies.

I don't see the need for a patent either... Shouldn't copyright laws be enough to deal with this?

I think we can blame the lawyers for this one... always looking for ways to make extra cash on the side no matter how stupid it is. One needs to look at the about boxes of certain programs to see how many patents are filed for the processes that are contained within that program.

Lawyers do not originate these attempts. The people who hire them do. cool.gif
