Hi all,
I recently starting ripping all my CD's to mp3 format for use on my computer/muvo/mp3 discman and not knowing any better i started using
lame 3.97 alpha 3, with EAC @ 192cbr (VBR tends to skip on my discman) . After discovering on HA forums that 3.90.3 was the better version i ripped a CD with it with --alt-preset cbr 192 and not noticing any difference at this bitrate (yet!) ive decided to just stick with 3.97. as its alot faster. I noticed though that 3.97 a3 and 3.96.1 (using encspot) uses ATH type 4 as opposed to 2 as the default of the earlier versions 3.90.3 etc. i understand that that ATH type means 'Absolute threshold of hearing' and it means that whats encoded will only be frequencies that humans can hear. Just wondered why they have decided to use 4 as the default if 2 is supposed to be optimal in 3.90.3.

It's an ALPHA. As far as I know, nothing in alphas is finalised yet.

I just was interested and wanted to know what the difference is between
the different ATH types and why one of them was better then the other. I tried to find information on it but couldnt really find anything that explained it.

It could be there is no difference. Just a change in the switch mappings. I don't know however.
