I think I would understand this problem more if the CD speed was consistently high, but it isn't the case. After an indeterminate / random time, the speed does indeed drop to 1 x (silence is golden) and I can then get on with listening.
Of course, it could be a fault, but why then is it random
At this stage, I just need to be sure it isn't something wierd in the BIOS or set up of WMP

It's a pain, for sure - I never figured out how to get consistant spindle-speeds from various players. Tried 'Drive-speed', 'CD-Bremse' et al, but no consistent results.
Nowadays I just rip any CD I want to listen to, which means waiting a few minutes for PLextools to do it's thing.

PS - of course, if you get a Plextor, you can use Plextools to play CD's, which allows absolute control of drive-speeds (of any Plextor drive) for ripping and playback.
