It is deceptively simple:-
I want to play an Audio CD on my PC. When I insert the CD to the drive, it spins the disc up to some incredible speed...and stays there. It is SO annoying - So loud ! However, the details are on the threads.

THANKS for any / all help. I am a very experienced audio engineer, but not so familiar with the intricacies of PC Audio.

I am at a total loss , and welcome any help whatsoever.

Try Foobar2000, with the option CDDA Input > 'Limit CD reading speed' checked?

You could try using Nero's Tools: CD Speed etc.

Hi Darky - If you had followed the post, you will find that I tried Nero drive speed. In fact, the develope of this utility confirmed that it will not work with my CD drive.

OK - done this...No difference whatsoever.

If your drive is supported, you could try CDBremse (German language for 'CD-brake'). The tool is in German language, though. List of supported drives.

You did say any help would be welcome, so here goes: have you thought about getting a new drive that allows the reading speed to be modified?

AudioCD can be played in two ways - digitally (by extracting audio in data mode), or by launching the playback in CDDA mode (then your drive natively reads the CD and analog audio goes from your drive straight to the sound-card). There is a chance that your drive will switch to lower read-speed in the 2nd case, so if you have a cable between the drive and sound-card, you can try to disable digital playback in device manager and play some AudioCD with Windows CD-player.

I think I would understand this problem more if the CD speed was consistently high, but it isn't the case. After an indeterminate / random time, the speed does indeed drop to 1 x (silence is golden) and I can then get on with listening.

Of course, it could be a fault, but why then is it random

At this stage, I just need to be sure it isn't something wierd in the BIOS or set up of WMP

It's a pain, for sure - I never figured out how to get consistant spindle-speeds from various players. Tried 'Drive-speed', 'CD-Bremse' et al, but no consistent results.

Nowadays I just rip any CD I want to listen to, which means waiting a few minutes for PLextools to do it's thing.

PS - of course, if you get a Plextor, you can use Plextools to play CD's, which allows absolute control of drive-speeds (of any Plextor drive) for ripping and playback.

I have a NEC 5700A drive that started to have a problem where it spun up till the point
were the noise was unbearible.

1. Playing the CD in analog mode, slow the drive down as soon the track starts playing.
2. Reflashing the Firmware help a little.

Unfortunatly for me, the spin up problem lead was just the start to the drive failing.
The problem got worse with the drive opening with the cd still spinning !.

If the drive is under warrenty see to it being replaced and if it is not, new drives
are not too bad in price
