Dibrom
Hi all,

Well, we successfully moved HA over to the new server today, as well as moving from our old VBulletin software to InvisionBoard.

Some things to make note of:

- Private messages did not get carried over. Sometime tomorrow I will reenable this portion of the old HA site only, so that users can copy any pm's they need to their hard drive.

- The vbcode did not get activated properly in the posts transferred over. I think I can fix this.. if you edit a post and save it, the code comes out fine.. so it should just be a matter of making some changes to the databases.

- Avatars didn't carry over, you'll have to reupload them.

Some reasons why I switched software:

- IBF is nicer.

- IBF is free.

- IBF is easier for me to extend with less hacks.

Some notes about the new server:

- HA is now located on a dedicated server. We shouldn't have to worry about bandwidth again for a looong time. The new server should also be much more snappy and response than the last one, and now that I have full control over the hardware and software, I'm hoping we'll see less downtime than with the old host.

Other Stuff:

- All users that were moderators or admins are no longer these things. This has all been reset as a part of transferring over to the new software. To regain moderator or admin status (and this counts for everyone), you must private message me with exactly why you think you should have these rights. Sorry, but the security on HA got a little bit too loose for my liking. Most people who were admins before, but did not need actual admin rights, will now probably be moderators instead. Moderators who did nothing before, will just be regular users.

- I know some of you won't like the smaller font of this new forum. I'm working on supplying some different skins for you guys to use, and this will be addressed in that manner. I'm also planning on adding a text-only mode for some people who would prefer that.

- Caching is enabled on this forum. I'm not sure exactly how that might affect things yet. We'll have to wait and see..

- For a few days there will be no frontpage or dedicated news section like on the old Hydrogenaudio.org. I'm going to be making quite a few rearrangements to the setup and it's going to take me a short while to get things back to where they were. Please be patient.

Hrmm, that's all I can think of for today.

Things are still a little rough around the edges folks, I know this wink.gif

Give me a bit of time and all will be straightened back out. I suggest in the meantime that you all go check your profiles and set them up the way you like, redo your sigs, reupload avatars, etc. Let's get this thing back on track wink.gif

Oh, and for some of you wondering about the URL.. Well, Audio Illumination is a project which some of the HA staff has been working on (related to the faq stuff..) for awhile. I wasn't planning on using this url, but since we kind of ran out of bandwidth on the old server, I didn't have much choice. As we get further along in this project (we are making great progress), I'll give some details on what it's all about.

As for the hydrogenaudio.org domain, I'm going to try and get the isp to release it to my new nameservers so I can point it at the new forum. I'm not sure how long this is going to take.. so bear with me.

Ok, that's about it. Have fun guys biggrin.gif

I'm gonna have to get used to the new smileys... blink.gif

Dibrom, is there a way to fix all the links with posts pointing to other posts? I mean, do you have a way to convert the "&threadid=NNNNN" or "&postid=NNNNN#postNNNNN" hyperlinks so that they point to the correct thread or post on this new board?

If you didn't keep the same keyfield values for all the posts, I guess it becomes much more complicated than a simple search-and-replace. Still, it would be nice to salvage those links, although there are certainly higher-priority things to worry about right now.

So far, though, this new board is pretty slick. Thanks for your continued efforts to improve HA, Dibrom!

Yeah, I think that it's possible, it'll just take me some time some day to sit down and write out some more crazy regulary expression stuff.

We'll see.

The first of order of business will be to fix the vbcode from the old site. I'm probably not going to get much of a chance to look into that till tomorrow though.

It took quite a bit of work today to get everything up and running. Glad to see some positive feedback smile.gif

Interesting board. I wish this (and other boards) started including a Jabber Identity in the personal profile, along with the traditional ICQ/AIM/Yahoo/MSN ones.

Some people may be wondering what Jabber is. As stated at the Jabbercentral web page title: "the future of instant messaging".

In brief, "Jabber is an open, XML-based protocol for instant messaging and presence."

Its aims include establishing an open and distributed standard IM system for the internet, none the less. The Internet Engineering Task Force has already received a second submision for the protocol to become an internet draft.

Has anyone ever wondered what if Microsoft, Yahoo and America On Line (who owns Mirabillis too) decided together to charge access fees in a suprise move, what will you and your friends do?

Think of email. Email is descentralized. Each ISP can operate its own server that communicates with other servers as well, and users can have many accounts in many servers too. Jabber goes in the same direction, but even better smile.gif

Details over here:
http://www.jabber.org/faq.html

Oh yes, most of the time, the jabber servers also allow you to connect from your jabber account to your old AIM/ICQ/Yahoo/MSN accounts thru the use of "transports". Althought this part is optional, since you can always keep the old clients running side by side to your jabber client if desired.

The idea however, is to make you and your friends move to the jabber protocol asap. You may never know...
Dibrom
Btw, just a hint for some of you guys who may not be aware of it..

For those that used to use the Active Topics section of the old board a lot, you can get the same functionality from here:

[snipping Jabber promoting]

Hi, Artemis3, love your nickname (as long as the tonality is on the A and not on the E wink.gif )
I agree on the Jabber ID being included, even though I don't use any PM programs anymore; I just think your post should be on a new thread, or perhaps simply a request instead of a well-meant Jabber promotion.

I was just talking about that on IRC smile.gif

Yeah, not only is the forum software significantly faster than VB, but this server is loads faster smile.gif

A definite improvement (although I'll miss the old weird smileys, hehe). Most notably, it's way faster. Great job, Dibrom!

PS. OK, this one ---> <--- is pretty weird, too.

Well, i won't comment on the new forum for now... things are still in the making.

But what i wanna point out is, when you upload an avatar, make sure to enter the dimensions (width x height) of the avatar picture, or else it will be resized to 100x100.
Gabriel
I am a little lost, but it is probably just because I need to get used to this forum.

What I am mainly missing is the "last active" or someting like that that was on the front page.

You can get that if you click the "Today's active topics"-link in the forum root view. And there will be a front page showing similar info hopefully soon.

Anyway, Invision board 1.1 will bring some familiar features missing at the moment like "view search results as posts" etc.

Here's a partial list which new features ibf 1.1 will add:

I think there's also skins which can be modified just a bit so that the layout will look pretty similar to the old forum.

there is a css editing section for the skin somewhere down in the admin panel, where you can change the size of fonts easily, great board it is B)

Lines of text are very dense, sometimes printed without gaps:

Hmm... Strange... I can't upload avatars in PNG... It says that the format is unsupported... huh.gif
Dibrom
Frank,

Yeah I've seen this issue pop up from time to time, I've never noticed it on a desktop, but I've seen it when browsing with konqueror on my pda. I think it has to do with scaling the text and this not working properly with CSS.

I'm not quite sure how to fix it yet, but I'll look into it.

Edit: Btw, I changed your IMG to a URL smile.gif

I've never seen this problem. What resolution are you running at?

If you're referring to this thread, it didn't resize properly before because of Frank's massive screenshot rolleyes.gif

Weird, png should work fine. I'll experiment some tonight and see if I can figure out what's wrong.

Is there any way to add the "location" field again for each user? It was kind of nice to know where everyone is from, especially on certain topics that involve buying recommendations & such...
Dibrom
Yes. Not sure when I'll get to that though.
Dibrom
Just a small status update..

I figured out how to fix the problem with the [ quote ] and other tags not showing up properly from the other board. Unfortunately it'll take me a little bit of work to correct since it requires me to write a little utility in php to search through the database using regular expression and stuff to replace the old tags.

Not exactly all that difficult, but I'm not exactly a php or sql guru (yet) either smile.gif

At any rate, it should be fixed in a few days.

Nice forums, hehe. Very XPish.

I hope this hasn't already been answered, but where can I get a listing of new (i.e. unread) posts?

UPDATE: Never mind, just found the thread...

{code} isn't leading to monospace fonts. At least not here.

I have a *very* odd problem. Lately, when i post something, the keyboard is somehow set to a US-Layout (no kidding). You must know, i am writing on a german keyboard with a "Germany" keyboard setting in Windows. Yet, it randomly occurs when i type something in this very window i'm typing in now, that the whole keyboard layout is changed. I say "randomly" cause it occured the last 3, 4 times i posted something, but - oddly enough - not right now. Other windows (Notepad etc.) are not affected by this phenomenon.

Does anyone else have the same problem or is it only me?
