So I use mp3trim every now and then (and am now quite conscious of its limitations and problems, but still find it useful in some situations), but I just reinstalled Windows (2000 Professional, with Service Pack 4) on my computer, and now mp3trim can't open mp3 files, and kicks out a warning message saying:

>Try (re)installing the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Audio Decoder ACM Component

I can't get ahold of the old Radium Fraunhofer codec, which seems to be under licensing issues right now (some public download sites have notices that they're no longer sticking it, because of the this issue). I've installed the LAME ACM codec (3.96), but mp3trim still can't read any files and spits out the same error message. Anybody know what I can do?

(And no, I don't remeber how I got whatever codec on my computer the first time around.)


[Edit: I just figured out what to do: I installed Windows Media Player 7.1, which includes the Fraunhofer ACM. So now mp3trim works for me. Sorry to bother.]

Yeah, I use mp3directcut.
It requires mpglib.dll, which I installed separately. Which didn't make any difference in mp3gain working.
If you're recommending mp3directcut as an alternative to what I use mp3gain for, I've honestly found its interface less useful *for most tasks* than mp3gain...
mp3gain has the problem that it deletes LAME header info of enc_delay and enc_padding, but I can restore this in foobar with the Fix Lame Header command.

So, for what reason were you recommding mp3directcut?

MP3Gain does that? Really? Or did you mean one of the other programs you were just talking about?

If you really mean that MP3Gain s deleting LAME header info, then please clarify. I thought I'd long ago ironed out any basic data-clobbering bugs like that.

I use mpTrim a lot - but how do you get it to use LAME. I thought it just saved back using the codec it had in the mp3 file it was working on.

mptrim doesn't modify the encoded data; I'm not sure why it needs an ACM (or why it specifically needs the Fraunhofer ACM) to do its job. Probably, it's not necessary, but just was programmed to make use the Fraunhofer ACM but could have been designed differently without too much trouble.

I'm also interested in why to use mp3directcut instead of mptrim. Again, I use mp3directcut for some thing, but mptrim for more. And I'm conscious of the issue that mptrim messes with the info in the LAME header.

If you're encoding your own stuff you own I wouldn't use mp3Trim. The reason I say this is because several years ago (perhaps 3, or 4) when I used the MAD Winamp 2 plugin for a spell the mp3's all of a sudden had more errors in them after trimming them. I instead use WavTrim on the wav files before encoding.

The reason the LAME ACM does not work is due to only the encoder being implemented.
You need a decoder to be able to interpret the MPEG frames.
I doubt it is FhG specific; rather, simply, Fraunhofer is the most common ACM decoder on windows.

Usually Windows use a Fraunhofer MP3 DECODER. If there are still problems with MP3 playback or decoding or other things like that (e.g. no sound in games), try to visit the website of microsoft and download the newest windows media codecs and media 7.1 minimum.

Them, check in control panel and look on the list of Audiocodecs. Double-vlick on Fraunhofer IIS MP3 decoder and check if the option is enabled, if it is disabled, enable the codec and make a higher priority as Lame ACM Codec, or remove the Lame codec.

Then, there shouldn't be no more problems....
