Full Version: Presets With 3.93

In 3.93, alt-presets and presets are now merged. This way I hope to bring more simplicity for novices.

--preset is calling what was formerly alt-presets. The old unmaintained presets (voice, radio,...) are now aliases to abr presets.

I would also like to introduce a --preset medium, like I mentionned in the past

Good think.

Is the --preset medium your preset ? Dibrom is working on a (or two) medium preset too : it will be annonying if two medium preset are released in a next future.

So we can now use --preset- standard etc. with lame 3.93?

Please, can you explain me which are the characteristics of this preset?

Thanx a lot

Good idea... is this "medium" preset something that would fit the needs of someone who wants to offer his MP3 files via internet, e.g. 64 kbps with a higher (or even no) lowpass filter setting than normal like "--lowpass 11" perhaps? I missed this option with the old presets like voice, FM and so on. Or would it be enough to choose --alt-preset 64 for these purposes?
Gabriel
The medium would be something smaller than standard, but around 150kbps, not 64.

Yes, --preset is now the same as --alt-preset, but there is still the 3.93 problem with the size bloat.

Gabriel, have the issues with 3.93 and vbr been fixed?

I'm referring to the issue related to the bit reservoir that Takehiro found a few weeks ago that was causing a 20-30kbps increase in bitrate with 3.93.

I hope that if this hasn't already been addressed (too busy to dig through the changelog atm), that it is fixed up before release.

AFAIK Takehiro fixed his branch awhile ago.

And about --alt-preset medium...

I'm working on 2 more presets at the moment, but have been interrupted by the need to switch servers/software.

The basic idea is that one of the presets is --aps -Y (~170-180kbps), and another is --aps -Y, possibly -V3, and --substep 1 (~150kbps) from Takehiro's experimental branch, with the substep stuff turned off for short blocks.

I think this will work better than the current "medium" preset that had been discussed in the past in the other thread.

Of course, this would also mean that it would be necessary to use Takehiro's branch, but I think this would be worth it if it would result in a higher quality and more finely tuned preset, especially if it's going to be added in along with the the former --alt-presets, which by design are supposed to be "state of the art" as far as quality, etc.

this is a very logical addition.. hopefully will help the newb's create decent quality mp3's without alot of help biggrin.gif Nice work!
Gabriel
No, the 3.93 problem with preset has not yet been fixed, but it will be soon.

Takehiro posted a patch for review last weekend. If everything is fine, he will commit it to the main branch this weekend.

I would also like to see more merge from Takehiro's branch, as he seems to be very active.
