how is the development of lame going and when would we expect to see an official encoder

3.97 alpha 7 has really good quality maybe the next version could replace 3.90.3?
robert
how soon the next stable release will be? well, there is some pending testing thread. Please contribute to the tests and this will speed up development.

I think 3.90.2/3 will never be replaced.
The reasoning seems to be that those where tested and tuned as much as possible by the HA community. Back in late 2001 when MP3 enjoyed a higher interest from HA people.
Right now... I doubt it will ever raise the same interest. Look at the Alpha testing thread. Not much activity.
I seriously doubt that any new version of LAME will ever be tested enough to grant "Recommended" status, even if it eventually surpasses 3.90.3 in quality/speed.
Just right know, for example, there is SOME evidence that the latest alphas are better.

imho, lame4 could possibly generate quite some interest.
