Hi,
The truth is that after 30 years of playing in bands and listening to loud music my ears are made of tin.

"Quality" is no longer a real issue and I would appreciate advice on the following:
I'm going to use Foobar to create mp3 files of a wide spectrum of music and would appreciate advice on:

1. what LAME encoder to use
2. what settings would I use to get a bitrate of about 128-140?
3. How do I set this bitrate (or switches) in the command line encoder in Foobar

Thanks,
auldyin

I'll be using an iPod for "portable listening"

I'm a bit surprised to see this kind of question coming from a long-time member like you, but anyway...

For those kind of bitrates, I would use the switches "-V5 --athaa-sensitivity 1" on LAME 3.96.1, as used in Roberto's latest 128kbps multiformat test.

Check the results and the bitrate distribution table here:

Thanks mate!

I'm just a bit pissed off having realised that I am scarcely able to tell the difference between Zing encoded stuff (about 6-7 years old) and Lame Insane (Dibroms preset).
I've been messing aroung with things I know next to nothing about and got kinda lost.

Actually I was just being a lazy sod!!

Thanks for your help.

Thanks guys.

The only thing good about my ears is that they still stick out at the side of my head!!

Cosmetic appendages!!!
