Hello, everybody. I've used several music players in my time and have decided to give Foobar2000 a serious try. So far, so good, but the lack of a volume slider in the default UI is driving me insane. I've done searching on the Web and here in the forums, and as I understand, the only way to access a volume control bar is either by (1) using the one in the program preferences (which is accessible by double-clicking the status bar) or (2) installing some sort of columns component that supports Kode's volume bar component. I can also assign key combinations, which I've done. Is this run-down of all my options correct?

My primary question is regarding why the slider was not added to the default UI. That's a bizarre choice to make, it makes migration more aggravating, it easily turns off some people, and it's downright inconvenient. I've seen several people wonder this online but I don't recall a decent semi-canonical answer. Seriously, why? I know the alternatives, and so on, but for some of us, a slider is convenient to have. I'm surprised this isn't covered in the FAQ (unless it is and I missed it).

Many thanks for any help.

hey j44xm fancy seeing you here tongue.gif
Anyway, in the default ui, yes those are the only options you have. Columns UI is however a very good UI and has a volume control component which allows you to either control the internal volume or any of your soundcards volumes.
But heres the good news, by the looks of it there will be a new volume control implemented in 0.9, which should allow for a volume slider on the default ui.

You could have searched for "volume" to get your answers, but oh well.

It's been designed that way as a whole, so you're not likely to convince the designer on that part of the job.

Use ReplayGain, and you won't have to touch the volume control very often. Use your amp/mixer/whatever to control the volume instead.

Use keyboard shortcuts, and you won't have to touch the mouse.

Hedge (!), thanks for the information. I guess I'll give the columned UI a try. Hopefully it won't bloat things up for me. The developer's free to do as he will, but it's just ... too strange. Otherwise, though, fantastic program.

Many people favor the columns UI - I'm afraid of change myself... when I relented and gave it a try, I found it satisfactory. As far as computing bloat, I haven't noticed a change in performance, and as far as visual bloat, it gives you the option to dumb down the UI to the point of playlist-only. You won't be disappointed.
