I don't visit the foobar forum too often, but I don't think this has been mentioned before. The standard install is just fine for me, however it's interesting to see this kind of customization of the interface. Here's a screenshot:

Ah! From the text of your post I was unaware there was an installer involved (it all makes sense now).

Generally, unofficial third-party distributions are frowned upon. Redistributors should at least have the courtesy to ask Peter or someone about repackaging his program. Currently, only Case has explicit permission to do so, IIRC.

And, is there a centralized site (no, not a message thread, sorry) that has user interfaces? and how hard could it be to hack a volume control on the front panel?

Under "Appearance", there are links to sites for configurations for both the default UI and for ColumnsUI.

Also, volume control is available as a panel for foo_ui_columns. I believe the extension's name is foo_uie_volume, but if you check the main thread for Columns UI (in the 3rd party plugin forum), then it should be listed there.
