I wanted to check my understanding of some of the settings in oggdropxp.

user posted image

If I check one of these, the resulting ogg file will be louder or softer based on the replaygain tag of the flac file, correct? So this would be a way to apply replaygain to files that are going to be played on a DAP that does not support replaygain, correct?

Also, will the HA recommended version of oggdropXP (from the sticky post in this forum) always use the HA recommended ogg encoder version?

Correct. That's precisely why they're there. smile.gif

I don't recall what the recommended version is, but if you check the About screen from the menu, the screen title will tell you which encoder engine is behind it.
dewey1973
The about screen tells me this...

And the sticky post tells me this:

QUOTE
John33's oggenc2.4 is a special version of the Ogg Vorbis encoder. "Features include compression from lossless files (Monkeys Audio, LPAC, FLAC, OptimFROG, WavPack and Shorten - requires presence of decoders), and the ability to specify 'padding' in the headers for subsequent insertion of Tags." (from Ogg Vorbis page at rarewares)

oggenc24.exe Xiph.Org's Vorbis 1.1 (ICL 8.1 compile for P3/AMD) With impulse_trigger_profile

Does that mean they are the same? I guess I'm confused by the difference between the "24" and the "1.1". I just want to make sure that whenever a new encoder version is made that oggdropXP is updated as well. Is that the case?

Thanks for your help!

I thought we were talking about oggdropXPd? But now you're referring to oggenc2.4? unsure.gif

Edit: I often update oggdropXPd before oggenc2.4. wink.gif

@john33:
Can i place the old version of oggdropXPd(1.7.11) together with new version(1.8.0) at same directory?
The old version i use are GT3B2, AoTuVB2, Megamix2 and Archer Beta 10,
New version are 1.1.0 and AoTuVB3.
I found i have many problem(crash, and encoding speed drop form ~15x to 5x blink.gif ...) with the 1.8.0 version if it share the configureation file with old version...

Can you please update the old version too? tongue.gif
But i think the old version is obsoleted for other user...

Not advisable because the ini file has a different structure.

See above for reasons for crashes, etc.

As you say. Unless there is any real demand for updated versions using the older libraries, I'd prefer not to further confuse the issue of which encoders people should use.

Awww....
But thanks for the answer,
I really like oggdropXPd and lamedropXPd, already use it for long time,
Keep the good work smile.gif

Oh, I thought that somewhere deep within the bowls of oggdropXPd was some form of oggenc. Like it was a GUI front-end for the encoder. I guess I was mistaken.

Thanks for the clarification!

oggdropXPd uses code from oggenc (the stuff that deals with reading uncompressed audio formats, and with actually calling libvorbis, I think - maybe others too?), but it doesn't call oggenc as an external executable, and it's a heavily modified version of the oggenc code. It also includes (presumably modified) versions of other code from vorbis-tools.

So oggdropXPd is a GUI front end for the actual encoder (which is in libvorbis), and it uses oggenc code internally, but it's a lot more than "just" an oggenc frontend.

i have a small, related, request for oggdropxpd.
would it be possible for it to include the advanced encoding option settings into the log file?
so far, it tells me what quality setting and scaling ive used, but not if ive enabled "impulse_noisetune".
since im testing which settings i want to use, i would greatly appreciate this little difference.
thanks.

You mean these ones?
CODE
UseDamp=0
BitAveDamp=0.000000
UseBias=0
BitResBias=0.000000
UseBits=0
BitResBits=0
UseNoise=0
ImpNoise=0.000000
UseTrigger=0
ImpTrigger=0.000000

There already there!! wink.gif

im not sure that i understood what you meant.
ive been encoding from flac, and im testing different settings.
i have oggdrop write a log file for me to check afterwards.
here is the log of two vorbis files i converted from the same flac, one without "impulse_noisetune", and one with.
the only way that i can tell these two files apart is from their output filesizes and their average bitrates, as everything else is exactly the same.
is there somewhere else i can look to see what settings my vorbis files were created with?

The settings you have used are stored in a file called oggdropXPd.ini which is in the same folder/directory as the oggdropXPd.exe file. smile.gif Although the contents of the ini file save the settings between sessions, it won't tell you specifically which settings were used on individual files.

I guess you're asking to have the Advanced Encoder options used written to the logfile? I'll add this to the next version that I'll probably be releasing towards the end of the week.

yes, exactly!
thanks very much for your help!
although, now that i understand what you meant, i could just use the ini file instead.
anyway, looking forward to your newest version. biggrin.gif

I found a strange problem with the new 1.8.0 oggdropXPd P4 version,
i have two version, AoTuVbB3 and 1.1.0, both at same directory(doesn't mix with old version anymore),
but seems it doesn't save the ini files at exit,
everytime i start oggdropXPd, the bitrate displayed always 0.0kbps,
when i drag n drop wav file to it, it's complain "could not initialize resample..."(sorry, forget the exact message tongue.gif ),
i have to right click the "encoding option", then adjust the quality slider,
so i can continue to encode audio file. ohmy.gif
john33
Hmmm, I'll look into that, but I think you'll find the version I'm releasing at the end of the week will fix this as I've done a major rewrite in some areas, including this one.
