with recorder prices coming down below $2k does anyone know of an effort to be able to play the DSDIFF files from a computer?

I'm not aware of any, but given the delta encoding architecture and the high "sampling" rate, wouldn't it be sufficient to run a simple sampling off a filtered simple integrating decoder? ie, keep a running sum of the +1/-1 inputs, run it through a lowpass, then peel off every N result and send it to the sound card?
